Weight classes exist in combat sports for very good reasons. A good big man beats a good little man, as the saying goes. However, the saying need not always be true, as was the case in the following instance. If two competitors with similar skill and ability levels go up against each other, the result will come down to who uses their skills more effectively and can pack more power in their (figurative and literal) punch.

And given the recent episode of bodybuilder Bradley Martyn calling out MMA flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson to a grappling match, it is important to understand how important are skills and ability compared to just size.

In a video that has gone viral online, a much smaller mixed martial arts practitioner is fighting a bodybuilder. It shows the two going at each other, trying to beat each other. The smaller guy goes for his opponent’s legs with a double-leg takedown and takes him down.

The two then get on the ground, with the smaller guy in the dominant position on top. Pretty soon, the smaller man hits the bodybuilder with punches, elbows, and knees, causing him to bleed. After some concerns, he is able to make the bodybuilder tap out, demonstrating the superiority of skills and abilities over mere size. Something similar has been going on in the world of MMA for some time now, with a bodybuilder and YouTuber calling out reputed names in the MMA world for random fights.

Bradley Martyn challenges Demetrious Johnson to a grappling match

In an interview with former UFC heavyweight and comedian Brendan Schaub, Martyn said that he would like to have a grappling match against former UFC flyweight champion and current ONE FC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. This came after Martyn said that he thought he could beat Johnson due to his much larger size. Martyn is 260 pounds, a full 140 pounds more than ‘DJ’, and is taller than the latter by a full foot.

Johnson responded to this challenge on the GOATcast Podcast with former UFC bantamweight champion Henry Cejudo. He said that while the bodybuilder was clearly much bigger than him, grappling is much more about technique and skills than size.

It’s funny, you know, he’s 265 lbs, he’s a bodybuilder. So obviously, he’s got the weight advantage, but at the end of the day, you know that’s the beautiful thing about grappling. It’s not about the weight, it’s about technique. And we’re gonna try to grapple,” ‘Mighty Mouse’ said.

Well, if the street brawl between the bodybuilder and his smaller opponent we have discussed is any indication, ‘DJ’, one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, will easily trounce Martyn. However, the beautiful thing about combat sports is that one never knows what the result will be until the fighters get in the ring.
