Joe Rogan is a BJJ black belt under 10th Planet jiujitsu coach and friend Eddie Bravo. The veteran commentator played an integral part in educating the early MMA fans about The Gentle Art. Even though Rogan has been around the UFC space for over two decades, there are very few training session videos where he displayed his skills.

One may have seen Rogan teaching Georges ‘Rush‘ St-Pierre how to throw perfect and powerful spinning back kicks. That moment was surreal for fans. But the veteran commentator has trained in jujitsu with UFC fighters as well.

A 2014 video showed Joe Rogan, T.J. Dillashaw, and Danny Castillo breaking down the D’arce technique. The martial arts enthusiast Rogan held the UFC vet’s neck and guided the bantamweight star through a traditional D’arce choke and his version of the neck choke.

After hearing Rogan‘s changed version, almost a neck crank, the former Team Alpha Male fighter tried the choke on the JRE podcast host. Upon Dillashaw’s execution of the choke, going palm-to-palm, instead of the traditional bicep grip, Rogan said, “That’s nasty.”

Rogan then guided Castillo as the former lightweight UFC athlete applied the choke on the former bantamweight champion. The ex Fear Factor host showed the choke on the bantamweight contender as he highlighted how the choke needed only one leg of an opponent in control. Moreover, putting the left shoulder on the mat gave him more leverage to crank the neck.

They filmed the jiujitsu video at Onnit Headquarters in Austin, TX in 2014, when T.J. Dillashaw was still part of the Team Alpha Male.

T.J. Dillashaw’s performance mesmerized Joe Rogan

The Team Alpha Male was a trailblazer for the shorter guys in MMA. Before the UFC adopted the WEC, it was the best promotion for lower weight classes. And even though Urijah Faber had a dominant run in the WEC. There was no champion from Team Alpha Male in the premier MMA organization.
