Poirier lost his last fight to the former UFC champion, Charles Oliveira, at UFC 269 on December 12 last year. The fighter put on a good fight in the initial rounds but was submitted in the third by ‘Do Bronx.’ A few weeks after the loss, he claimed that he was open to making a move to welterweight for his next bout.

“If I’m training once a day and then maybe do a couple two days here and there and eat healthy and my weight’s like 178. I’m gonna just fight at 55. There’s no reason. These guys are going to be too big at 17,” said Poirier.

Poirier was asked if he would rather take a big money fight at 170 over a title contender fight at 155. He stated he would choose to take the money to fight.

If Poirier made the move up to 170, fans could see him take on Nate Diaz, Colby Covington, or Conor McGregor, which would definitely be a ‘big money fight.’

Ariel Helwani on why the UFC has not booked Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirier yet

Renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani cleared doubts on why the Poirier and Diaz fight has not been finalized yet. Poirier and Diaz were to fight in 2018, at UFC 230. However, due to Poirier’s injuries, he couldn’t compete in the bout. After his loss against Oliveira, Diaz and Poirier both hinted at an upcoming bout, but a few months later, all talks were over.

Helwani wrote via Twitter, “If Diaz re-signed, they would do it tomorrow. He hasn’t, so they aren’t.”
