Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier are set to fight each other for the second time at UFC 291. Poirier secured a dramatic victory in their last bout, back in 2018. However, the storyline has seemingly changed for the upcoming battle. The fighters are pitted to compete for the vacant BMF belt.

The UFC lightweight division is indeed full of action. Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush have taken over the talks with their bout in the range for UFC 289. With the land of combat sports in grave anticipation about who would get the chance to fight Islam Makhachev for the title, ‘The Diamond’ has taken a powerful stance with the claim that he and Gaethje were next in line for the title shot. Despite Gaethje’s comments about the BMF belt being “stupid“, Poirier’s claims were strong indeed.

Dustin Poirier opines about the fighters next in line for the lightweight title shot

Recently, Gaethje and Poirier were interviewed by the former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. DC pointed out that both of the fighters had aspirations to wear the championship belt. Undeniably, Poirier agreed with the UFC commentator. He further opined that although he and his next opponent weren’t jumping over Dariush for the title shot, they were certainly next in line. Although Gaethje previously revealed that he thought the belt was “kind of stupid” in an interview, Poirier didn’t back away from including him in the war for the title.

Poirier said, “I think this is a number one contender fight for sure. I don’t think we jump over Beneil if he wins, but we’re next in line.” Thereafter, Cormier stuck out for Oliveira. He was of the belief that whoever won the UFC 289 bout should have a chance to fight the champion. DC said, “Whoever wins this fight should get the Islam fight, considering it’s a new matchup, or at least that’s what I would imagine.”

Poirier was of the same thought as well. However, he preferred to have everything in writing on the contract. He said, “That’s what I would imagine, too. But you know how this is, man. If it’s not in writing on contract, we just take it one day at a time.”

Poirier believes himself to be the most exciting fighter

With the BMF belt on the line, the entire world has been engulfed in talks about Poirier fighting Gaethje for the second time. However, Poirier’s confidence has remained as unwavering as ever. When asked about his ranking in the list of most exciting fighters in an interview with SiriusXM, he declared that he was the man at the top.

‘Diamond’ said, “F*ck all that, man. F*ck the shortlist, I am the guy!” The confidence is indeed well placed. His previous fight with Gaethje was declared to be the Fight of the Year, with a win added into his pocket.
