Catchphrases are most prominent in the world of professional wrestling, and almost every wrestler seems to have one. However, catchphrases have also found their place in the combat sports world, too, especially in MMA. UFC 300 headliner and light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira also has one catchphrase, and today we will be uncovering the meaning behind it.

Alex Pereira is a stone-cold killer inside the Octagon. A rather expressionless individual, fans hardly find him smiling. But he’s known to say the word ‘Chama‘ before and to begin and end a conversation. Let’s uncover the meaning behind ‘Chama’. What exactly does it signify?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word ‘Chama’ actually means ‘flame’ or ‘Inspiration’ in Portuguese. However, Alex Pereira uses the word as a slang. The word for him indicates excitement and even encouragement. Pereira’s use of ‘Chama’ is similar to how people say ‘let’s go’ and ‘come on’ in English. It is a simple yet a very catchy word for fans to chant whenever they are graced with the presence of ‘Poatan’, which was evident when he was in attendance at UFC 297.

Alex Pereira traveled to Canada to support Sean Strickland in his fight against Dricus du Plessis. The fans were excited to see him attend the press conference, but when he attended a fan meet-up event, they couldn’t help but chant ‘Chama’ as loud as they could. Despite being in the UFC for only a few years, Alex Pereira has become a fan favorite. His popularity has led a fellow combat sports athlete to admit his admiration for ‘Poatan’.

Alex Pereira has established himself as one of the biggest combat sports athletes in the world and former boxing champion Ryan Garcia seems to be a fan of the Brazilian. During an appearance on the ‘Impaulsive’ podcast, ‘KingRy’ praised Poatan’s boxing abilities, especially his hook, and even praised Pereira’s placement while striking his opponents.

“You know what’s crazy though? I’ve never seen somebody throw a hook like me, but Pereira does throw a hook like me. He throws it where you don’t really use your legs too much. You just, ‘Whack,” said Ryan Garcia. The 25-year-old boxer also claimed that there are very few fighters who are as scary as Alex Pereira.

Alex Pereira would hope to keep his winning momentum going with a win this weekend over Jamahal Hill. It won’t be easy since ‘Sweet Dreams’ is driven to win back his title, which he never lost. We will have to wait and see what the outcome of the UFC 300 headliner will be on April 13.
