For years, Kamaru Usman has been one of the biggest names in the UFC. With an impressive winning streak and a memorable title run, fans consider ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ one of the UFC’s best. However, things have not been going his way lately. Usman lost two consecutive fights against the current welterweight champion, Leon Edwards. And now, he returns to fight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294.

It is not just his professional career where Usman has struggled. Apparently, the former champion’s family life has also been rigged with difficulties. One of the most unfortunate chapters of his life revolves around his father, Muhammed Nasiru. Years ago, Usman’s father was convicted on some serious charges.

Kamaru Usman’s dad’s conviction

Muhammed Nasiru, who arrived in the United States in 1989, built a life as an entrepreneur. He operated two ambulance companies, Royal Ambulance (founded in 2003) and First Choice EMS (founded in 2005). However, his problems soon arose as Nasiru found himself embroiled in legal troubles. Moreover, he was accused of manipulating official documents known as ‘run sheets’.

The ambulance companies initially raised concerns, alleging discrepancies in the information in these documents. Subsequently, the Usman family faced a fraud case that cast doubt on Muhammed Nasiru’s involvement in the alleged conspiracy. As they strove to enhance their reputation through intensified marketing efforts, these actions inadvertently contributed to increasing suspicions regarding Muhammed’s role.

Tragically, the legal proceedings concluded with Muhammed Nasiru being found guilty on multiple charges. Further, this resulted in a 15-year sentence in a federal penitentiary. Appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast some time ago, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ narrated this story.

Kamaru Usman never fought in a PPV because of his dad

From 2015 to 2019, the former welterweight champion had 11 fights in the UFC. However, not even a single fight out of all those was at a UFC PPV. Instead, all these bouts took place at UFC Fight Night. This fact shocked the fans for a long time. Because Usman was a rising star in the promotion, it was strange for him to never show up in PPVs.

However, fans later got to know the unexpected truth behind this. Apparently, Usman himself had asked the UFC not to book PPV fights for him. This was because the UFC veteran did not want his father, who was in prison, to miss his fights. If his bouts took place at UFC PPVs, they would not have been telecasted in prison.

Now, his father is out of prison and will surely watch the UFC veteran fight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. How do you think this fight pans out? Let us know in the comments below.
