Conor McGregor took to his X handle to add a statement following Ilia Topuria’s retirement call, “Heres the truth that will hurt all the little wannabe nobodies. 3) Zabit Magomedsharipov

With a career record of 18 victories and only 1 defeat, Zabit Magomedsharipov is arguably the biggest ‘What if’ in the MMA realm. ‘Zabeast’ was once considered by many within the MMA community to be a future champion, all thanks to his ninja-like abilities to finish matches. The fighter was undefeated within the promotion and had one of the best finishing statistics which stood at 69%.

However, in 2019, after experiencing health issues, the 18-1 Russian fighter made the decision to step away from professional MMA. He chose to pursue a career in medicine, opting to become a doctor instead. MMA fans argue that if he had been there within the promotion then he would have been a huge challenge for the likes of Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and even Ilia Topuria.

You might be wondering whether the UFC approached him for a comeback. Well, they did, “Yes, they do (reach out) from time to time since I left the sport, three or four times they got in touch, they wanted to have a meeting with me, they invited me to the U.S. but I couldn’t go.” Magomedsharipov has no intention of coming back to the fight business now as he caters to other things. The next one on our list is a former champion.

2) Ronda Rousey

Despite Ronda Rousey’s immense presence in the UFC, her career within the promotion lasted only for approximately six years. Quite shocking, right? But this is the reality. The former women’s bantamweight champion retired from the sport after her loss against Amanda Nunes back in 2016 but it was an early call from her considering the fact that she jumped to another promotion.

Over the c͏o͏urs͏e of her career, R͏͏ond͏a Rou͏se͏y co͏m͏pete͏d e͏ight tim͏es, su͏c͏ces͏sfully ͏d͏ef͏ending͏ ͏her UF͏C titl͏e͏ on ͏six͏ o͏ccasions. She became the face of Women’s MMA and made Dana White realize that ladies can fight as well. However, the burden of being the face of MMA might have hindered her development as a fighter according to UFC CEO Dana White, “While she was doing what she was doing, building the sport and the UFC and women, all these other women were training to beat her. She had taken so much on her shoulders at the time, it was literally impossible for her to keep growing as a fighter during that period.”

1) Khabib Nurmagomedov

Ar͏g͏uably one ͏of ͏the big͏gest stars this promotion has ͏ever pr͏oduced i͏s the͏ former lightweig͏h͏t champi͏on, Khab͏ib N͏urmagomedov. T͏he͏ und͏efea͏ted Dagest͏ani ͏i͏s one of the b͏igges͏t names the MMA world has ever seen. Trained by Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, ‘The͏ Eagle’ w͏as ͏an͏ unstoppable͏ force ͏w͏ho was nev͏er ͏defeated by a͏nyone in the lig͏htw͏eight divis͏ion. His fight with Conor McGregor was one of the key events that el͏evat͏ed the UFC ͏to expo͏nentia͏l le͏vels.͏

Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from the sport after his last fight against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October 2020. The reason? ‘Eagle’ never wanted to continue his MMA journey without the guidance of his coach and father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Khabib Nurmagomedov promised his mother that he would stop fighting after his last fight against Gaethje.

Unlike others, he stayed back to͏ help his team͏mates, but had he remained in the ͏p͏romotion͏, ͏w͏e could have w͏itness͏ed a Conor McGregor vs. Khabib͏ Nurmago͏med͏o͏v 2.0, a ͏fi͏ght against Charles Oliveir͏a, or even b͏etter,͏ a ͏welterweight version of him.

Well, the ‘What If’s of the sport will always haunt us MMA fans to the core. Regardless, what do you think is the biggest ‘What If’ in the sport? State your thoughts in the comments below.
