Combat sports are a show business. And UFC lightweight Bobby Green is a consummate showman, despite the tough life he has had. The California native had a tumultuous childhood with his father being imprisoned when he was a child. His mother, on the other hand, had substance abuse issues which prevented her from paying proper attention to her children.

With all of this going on in the background, Green started wrestling in high school, which eventually led him to a BJJ black belt and become a professional mixed martial artist. An MMA veteran with over forty fights, Green is a unique individual and fighter with a fighting style akin to Anderson Silva, Roy Jones Jr., and Muhammad Ali. And after his loss to Jalin Turner in a lightweight bout at UFC Fight Night last night, let us take a look at his fighting style.

Bobby Green’s fighting style

Bobby Green comes to MMA from a grappling background. The California native is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a former King of the Cage champion who has been in the UFC for nearly a decade. However, despite his BJJ antecedents, the #13 ranked UFC lightweight has more wins via KO/TKO than submissions.

The 37-year-old has a very unique and distinct fighting style. Like the man himself, his fighting style can be best described as flamboyant, with many unorthodox, ostensibly technically incorrect elements. Green is a counterpuncher who takes a low guard, i.e., keeps his hands low and baits his opponents to strike, sneaking in counters from hip level, which is more difficult to spot than strikes thrown from an orthodox stance.

While his low hands may seemingly give his opponents a clear shot at his chin, his excellent distance and range management, combined with his quickness, mitigates this. While his fighting style may see him take more risks, given his long experience in the Octagon, ‘King’ can make it work for him and has notched up 31 wins in his MMA career on the back of his self-described ‘Hood’ style of fighting.

Green was forced to use this style as he came to blows with #8 ranked lightweight Arman Tsarukyan, who is headlining the Austin card against #4 ranked Beneil Dariush, in the hotel hosting the event. But the thing about Green’s fighting style is that when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong as was clear in his devastating first-round loss to Jalin Turner at UFC Fight Night Austin last night.

Late stoppage mars Turner’s knockout of Green

Jalin Turner, replacing Dan Hooker on short notice for UFC Fight Night Austin scored a devastating stoppage victory over Bobby Green in the first round. Their co-main event bout lasted barely three minutes as both men came out swinging right off the gate. Turner eventually connected with Green’s temple, wobbling him.

Another shot from the former floored ‘King’, who fell down face-first on the canvas. At this point, even the commentators felt the fight was over. But, referee Kerry Hatley let Turner jump on Green and ground-and-pound him until Green seemingly lost consciousness. What do you think about the stoppage? Do you agree the bout should have been stopped earlier?
