Alexa Grasso may have entered the UFC 285 cage against Valentina Shevchenko as a heavy underdog. But she ultimately proved that she had what it takes to become a champion. On the other hand, Shevchenko, widely regarded as one of the best in women’s MMA, suffered a shocking loss. The UFC world has witnessed a lot of incidents where a fighter of a much lower caliber has got the better of their touted opponent. However, such exceptions don’t happen every time.

A rematch between them has often put back things in the old order, proving the inferior fighter’s previous victory to be a fluke one. UFC fans might remember how the GWOAT in MMA, Amanda Nunes, lost her title to her Bantamweight rival, Julianna Pena, at UFC 269. But ‘The Lioness’ proved that she was miles ahead of Pena when she reclaimed her title at UFC 277. A large chunk of fans might be currently wondering if ‘Bullet’ can also pull off a similar task.

Valentina Shevchenko is locked in on Alexa Grasso

Valentina Shevchenko recently sat down with the noted ESPN and UFC interviewer, Megan Olivi. Apart from talking about her training in Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, ‘Bullet’ also showcased tremendous confidence towards reclaiming the UFC Flyweight gold at UFC Fight Night 227.

But at the pre-UFC Fight Night 227 press conference, Shevchenko put out her views a lot of times that she only wants to focus on her upcoming fight currently. Hence, nothing can be said about what is she planning to do next until she reveals it herself.

However, she did throw a hint at a trilogy fight against the retired former UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight champ, Amanda Nunes. But with Nunes not even really planning a return, a ‘Bullet’ vs. ‘The Lioness’ trilogy looks really far-fetched.

Shevchenko sees a  clear path to victory

The UFC 285 co-main event presented an enthralling matchup for the audiences. Despite being an underdog, Grasso matched almost every strike from ‘Bullet’ with one of her own. Her superb footwork also caused Shevchenko to miss a number of her powerful spinning fists and kicks. But a lot of fans still viewed the fight to be in ‘Bullet’s’ favor.

Even one of the ‘ufc.com’ reports reveals that Shevchenko was ahead on the scorecards before she got submitted by Grasso in the fourth round. But ‘the Kyrgyzstani’s’ answer to Olivi in the earlier mentioned interview revealed that defeating her this time won’t be that easy. Olivi questioned ‘Bullet’, “What will it mean for you to once again be the flyweight queen?”. ‘The 35-year-old’ answered with supreme confidence, “This is my destiny”.

Shevchenko also revealed that everything she had done leading up to this UFC Noche fight was to achieve her primary goal, which was reclaiming the UFC flyweight gold. It’s understandable that Grasso won’t be settling for any half-measures either. The fans may expect an absolute enthraller of a fight amidst such situations.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
