Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier spoke out on the final main event fight that unfolded at the Apex Facility. Tyron Woodley squared-off against Colby Covington in a welterweight grudge match that was many years in the making. Daniel Cormier had plenty to say about Woodley’s disappointing outing on his show ‘DC and Helwani‘ alongside ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

The former 170-pound champion has dropped 15 straight rounds in his last three promotional outings. Moreover, he hasn’t looked the same, and fight fans have called for his retirement from the sport. Tyron Woodley had no answer for Colby Covington’s pressure and lost via stoppage owing to a rib injury in the fifth-round.

The former Olympian, Cormier, analyzed Woodley’s storied career that included his run as champion. Chiefly, Helwani pressed the question surrounding Tyron’s ability to be aggressive in his fights as of late. ‘DC’ was quick to point out that Woodley’s style has never truly involved being the aggressor in a fight.

“When was he? When was Tyron aggressive? We need to take a step back. That was one explosion [Robbie Lawler fight], just like the Jay Herron fight was an explosion, the Josh Koscheck fight was an explosion… Even the Steven ‘Wonderboy’ fight. Steven would go forward and Tyron would hit him with the right hand as he was backing up.”

Cormier doubled down on the fact that Tyron’s UFC reign was relatively slow, with decisions being a prominent feature. Also, this has been the norm, except when he fought Darren Till.

‘DC’ continued, “T-Wood has always been a guy who likes to set traps. He’s a very smart guy, and when you got into the trap is when he kinda explodes into you and he’s knocking guys out that way. When you look at “T-Wood’s” title reign, beating “Wonderboy”…those were two pretty slow fights. The guys who he’s fighting now, they continue to engage with him. That’s why he hasn’t been able kind of to do his thing.”

Tyron Woodley will have to do plenty of soul searching, as it seems like he’s reached a crossroads in his career. Although a three-fight skid is not uncommon, Woodley hasn’t looked competitive in his recent fights. The MMA community will keenly observe the trajectory of the rest of the 38-year-old’s career.
