42 years old and still fighting! This weekend, former champion Holly Holm will return to action at UFC 300 for the 16th time under the UFC banner. The first woman to knock out Ronda Rousey, Holm will butt heads against one of the UFC’s recent signings, Kayla Harrison on April 13. But before we get to the historic PPV event, let’s get to know Holm better by learning about the people behind her success, especially the people who trained her and trained with her, contributing to the longevity of ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’s MMA career.

Holly Holm, a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, entered the world of combat sports in her mid-teens. She found a lot of success and won multiple honors in both boxing and kickboxing before she found her way into the world of mixed martial arts. When she started training in MMA, she did not have to go far from her hometown to find a reputed MMA gym.

Holly Holm is a big fan of UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, leading her to join the Jackson Wink MMA, where ‘Bones’ once invited Aljamain Sterling to train, but ‘Funk Master’ declined the invitation. Jon Jones would be unceremoniously ushered out of that gym after he got arrested over charges of an assault on his then-fiancee, Jessie Moses. However, the loss of her favorite fighter did not seem to affect Holms, as she continued to grind in that gym, where she trains to this day.

Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn are the coaches for Holly Holms. The experienced duo has trained former champions like Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans, and even B.J. Penn. These are some of those fighters who’ve left an indelible mark on MMA. Moving over,  Holms has some world-class fighters as teammates. Frank Mir, Tim Kennedy, Michelle Waterson-Gomez, Carlos Condit, and the aforementioned Jon Jones are just a few names ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ has teamed up with in the past and the present.

In an interview with ‘Muscle & Fitness‘, the 42-year-old UFC veteran revealed that she often trains six days a week during fight camps, with just one day of resting and recovery. Moreover, the workout and training she engages in is not anything less than rigorous. Holly Holm stated, “Monday through Friday every morning we have class and it’s intense. They’re pretty hardcore workouts. Monday there’s MMA sparring, Tuesday is sparring, Wednesday is wrestling, Thursday is MMA day, Friday is wrestling, and Saturday I do sprint runs.”

However, when she’s not fighting, the former bantamweight champion chooses to do running exercises every day. Holly Holm also claimed that the weekday nights are reserved for mostly wrestling and grappling sessions. She also looks to strike a balance in her training routine. “Monday through Friday, four out of the five days I’m running distance… I go back to either jujitsu or wrestling at night, Monday through Thursday. I’m working out about four and five hours a day, depending on my schedule,” the former bantamweight champion added.

Given that she’s crossed her 40s, not many think that Holly Holm can defeat Kayla Harrison, who has been dominant in her entire MMA career. However, ‘The Preacher’s daughter is a former champion, and it may not be wise to count her out before UFC 300. We will have to wait and see how things turn out for Holm this Saturday.
