There are several UFC personalities who relocated after spending years in their native land. Fans may have witnessed such UFC fighters carrying two flags of different countries during their walkouts. The noted former UFC Flyweight champ, Valentina Shevchenko, is one such example. She has carried the national flags of Kyrgyzstan and Peru together to the octagon multiple times. However, she is far from being the only one who has represented two countries in the UFC.

There’s another lady in the promotion’s strawweight division who has often opted for walkouts similar to Shevchenko. Well, she is none other than the 30-year-old UFC heartthrob Loopy ‘Lupita’ Godinez. Although several fans may have witnessed her walking out with two flags, a lot of them are completely ignorant about this as well. So let’s take a look at ‘Lupita’s’ nationality and ethnicity to learn which two countries she represents in the UFC.

Fans may remember that Loopy Godinez took to the Octagon for the last time at the coveted ‘Noche UFC’. It was held on 16 September this year to celebrate the Mexican Independence day. Godinez took on the known UFC strawweight, Elise Reed, on the night and also achieved a victory via a rear naked choke in the second round.

Fans may also know that almost every fight on this night featured a Mexican fighter. Well, most of their rivals were from different countries. But, Godinez represented Mexico only. Reports say that she is a Mexican by birth who was born in Aguascalientes, one of the most populated cities in the entire country of Mexico. The Mexican flags raised in the crowd after her Noche UFC victory documented her Mexican nationality. However, there are no reports that talk about her roots.

What led Loopy Godinez to land in the second country she represents?

‘Loopy’s’ father, Carlos Godinez, once got into severe trouble with the local cartel members in Aguascalientes who demanded protection money from him. It was actually a lot that Carlos couldn’t afford to pay. This is when he decided to take a flight to Vancouver, Canada. However, he told his family, along with the 14-year-old ‘Loopy’, that they were on a trip to Disneyland.

Hence, Canada is the second country that she represents. She has lived in Vancouver, after moving in at age 14. But, it’s quite apparent that her fans aren’t limited to the countries of Canada and Mexico. Godinez is currently gearing up for her next fight at UFC 295 against the Brazilian, Tabatha Ricci. We may expect that a large chunk of non-Mexican and non-Canadian fans in the coveted Madison Square Garden will also root for her victory on 11 November. Do you think she will be able to delight them as she did in her Noche UFC fight this year?

My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC.
