Colby Covington is one of the UFC’s most accomplished trash-talkers. Perhaps the greatest one at that in the current welterweight roster. But it was his sheer skill that helped him claim the welterweight title to become the interim champ. But who took the belt from him?
It wasn’t exactly a fight that tore the belt away from his hands. Covington became the interim champ after fighting Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225. Eventually, the belt ended up in Kamaru Usman‘s hands. How did this come to be? Here’s all you need to know.

Colby Covington and his interim championship
Colby Covington has fought Kamaru Usman twice. Both times, he fell short and lost to ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. Before that though, he had the interim championship to himself after claiming the vacant title. However, he would soon be stripped of it.
Covington had to undergo nose surgery. In his absence, the title was lost to him. Upon his return, he needed to tear through two fighters. First, he defeated Robbie Lawler in a fight that led up to facing Usman for the undisputed welterweight title. Here, he had his jaw broken.
Unfortunately for ‘Chaos’, he lost via knockout. X-ray scans would soon reveal a brutal crack in his jaw, which probably caused the fighter’s downfall. He would soon face Usman in a follow-up fight and lose once again. This time via decision. So what happens next for him?
Next, he’s up for yet another title shot. This time, he’s facing none other than the current and reigning champion, Leon Edwards. Edwards has put up a brilliant 12-fight win streak to get to this point, defeating Kamaru Usman for the title in the midst of it. Will he win against ‘Rocky’?

‘Rocky’ is casually confident against ‘Chaos’
Leon Edwards is one of the best talents in the UFC today. While his grappling is impressive, his striking is perhaps what got him the moniker of ‘Rocky’. Edwards recently gave an interview as he sat down with ESPN, and he was certain Covington was just another name to cross off his list.
“I think Dana came out before and said if Kamaru weren’t the champion,” he said. “Colby would be the champion you know. So I feel like me going out there and taking out someone like Colby just keeps adding to my story you know and that’s it really it’s just another fight and another person in front of me.” Edwards said back then.
