Being one of the most all-rounded fighters in the welterweight division, Gilbert Burns has a stable record of 22 victories and 7 defeats in his MMA career. Burns’s emergence to MMA has been nothing but a story straight out of Hollywood. Why? Well, that’s because he was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis when he was just months old. His career has been filled with victories but he has his own set of losses as well.

So, where did ‘Durinho’ fall short? Burns is an experienced grappler with well-known among the welterweights of the UFC for his striking prowess also. However, he has been out-grappled and out-struck before. Here’s a look at his losses ahead of his bout this Saturday.

Gilbert Burns’ 7 UFC Losses: Who did he lose to?

Right now, Gilbert Burns is coming off a loss against Jack Della Maddalena. The two went head-to-head at UFC 299, where ‘Durinho’ came up short against Della Maddalena, who won via a knockout elbow. This marked his 7th loss in the UFC and his MMA career.

Before that, Burns went up against Belal Muhammad at UFC 288 and once again lost that bout by way of unanimous decision. It must be noted that Burns was injured in that fight. Before that, he squared off against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 and once again lost via a unanimous decision. However, he put on a showing that raised his stock in the promotion.

Interestingly, it looks like fights that went the distance have troubled the fighter in the past. However, he’s also suffered a knockout loss against Kamaru Usman, the former welterweight champion, in his first and only UFC title bout at UFC 258. After putting the champion on the back foot in the opening round, Burns was hurt in the second and finished in the third.

Burns has also faced a knockout loss against Dan Hooker back in 2018 at UFC 226. Yes, the Brazilian was fighting in the lower 155 lbs weight class back then. Hooker had an interesting career then and there where he was rising to fame for his technical prowess and power, but soon slowly started facing more losses. The same cannot be said about Burns, who would go on to win six fights straight after the Hooker bout.

However, before Hooker, Burns fell to Michel Prazeres as well as Rashid Magomedov (both lightweight bouts) in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Yet again, Burns lost via unanimous decisions because both of his opponents managed to outperform him in the bouts. But these only count for his UFC bouts.

Has Burns lost outside of the promotion?

Gilbert Burns has a rather extensive grappling resume. He’s gone up against the likes of Gleison Tibau and Magomed Abdulkadirov. While both of these opponents were defeated by Burns, Davi Ramos and Jake Shields managed to defeat ‘Durinho’ in grappling.

While Shields took him down at Submission Underground 6, Ramos took him down at ADCC 2015. Interestingly, Burns has also grappled against Tommy Langaker who currently fights for ONE Championship and is a rather accomplished fighter himself.

Either way, the only opponent Burns should have to worry about now is Jack Della Maddalena who has an impressive resume himself. Maddalena is 16-2 in his professional career, on a 16-fight win streak with a 6-0 record in the UFC. This makes him a fearsome foe, but Burns knows a thing or two about taming wild fighters (the Chimaev fight is proof enough). Will he hand Burns another loss or will ‘Durinho’ halt the hype train? We will find out this Saturday at UFC 299 in Miami.
