Tony Ferguson is eager to get back to his old form. ‘El Cucuy’ lost his sixth fight on the trot to Bobby Green at UFC 291 back in July. This is in stark contrast to the twelve-fight win-streak the Mexican-American put together between 2013-2019, when he was considered among the best fighters and arguably the best fighter in the UFC, which also made him one of the most popular fighters among UFC fans.

To return to form, ‘El Cucuy’ has taken certain steps recently to change things up and get back in the groove. And as he sets up to face the hyped lightweight prospect Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296 on December 16, let us look at his gym, coaches, and who he trains with.

Where is Tony Ferguson currently training?

Tony Ferguson changed his MMA team and found a new gym to train with last year. The 39-year-old snapped ties with his longtime coaches including BJJ maestro Eddie Bravo, to join the Jackson-Wink gym in New Mexico. He snapped ties with his previous team after losing to Michael Chandler last year and decided to look for a new team, eventually settling on the New Mexico gym.

His former coach, Eddie Bravo, had said that his decision to coach Ferguson during his crushing defeat against Justin Gaethje was a mistake. Bravo admitted on Joe Rogan‘s podcast that he was not ready to take over as head coach and counsel the severely injured and disfigured Ferguson at UFC 249.

Bravo was unhappy and disappointed with some of the advice he gave Ferguson during the bout. The flat-earth theory proponent said that although the Mexican-American is well-known for his ‘rubber guard’ technique, he regretted advising Ferguson to employ it against Gaethje.

The Jackson-Wink gym has trained fighters of the highest caliber like UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, and seems suited to Ferguson’s needs. And to give him that extra boost, Ferguson is also training with an unexpected man: David Goggins.

Ferguson is also known for his unconventional and intense training methods, putting his body through extreme rigor to prepare for the octagon. Recently Ferguson has enlisted former Navy SEAL, ultramarathon runner, and motivator David Goggins to prepare for the Pimblett fight.

Goggins himself is known for his extreme and intense training methods, pushing himself and those who train with him to their absolute limits. Meanwhile, many in the MMA world are divided on his training with Goggins, feeling he may over-train ‘El Cucuy’.

Further, mental fortitude and endurance have always been Ferguson’s strong suit and, for that reason, many fans and pros do not see the need for the rigorous ‘hell week.’ What do you think? Will the training with Goggins pay off for Ferguson at UFC 296?
