In medieval times, warriors’ bruises and cuts earned on the battlefield were the ultimate proof of their strength and resilience. These marks symbolized their courage and dedication to the art of war. Although centuries have passed and men no longer fight in wars as they once did, the warrior’s spirit has not vanished. In the 21st century, warriors still exist among us. But how can we identify them today? One unmistakable hallmark is the presence of “cauliflower ears,” medically known as perichondrial hematomas.

This distinct feature is particularly common among MMA fighters, Muay Thai practitioners, and other combat sports athletes. Yet, when it comes to cauliflower ears, few embody this trait as strikingly as Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team of Dagestani fighters. Their cauliflower ears are on a whole other level. But what makes theirs so unique? Let’s dive into the reasons behind it!

The reason behind Dagestani fighters’ ‘distinct’ ears

UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov’s early years were far from typical. Growing up in the rugged mountains of Dagestan, he faced a life marked by hardship and discipline that would ultimately forge him into one of the greatest fighters of all time. With minimal distractions, ‘The Eagle’s’ fighting journey began at a young age under the strict guidance of his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s cauliflower ears, a hallmark of his combat sports career, are the result of years of intense training in wrestling and judo, where constant blows to the head and ears led to trauma. These repeated impacts caused blood clots to form within the ear, creating the distinctive deformity known as cauliflower ears. Although ‘The Eagle’ never officially joined the military like his father, his upbringing instilled in him the intensity and discipline of a soldier, a hallmark of his identity.

Khabib chooses not to get rid of cauliflower ears

Years ago, UFC rising middleweight Bo Nickal shared a childhood dream with his parents: “I want cauliflower ear.” Now, with an undefeated 7-0 record in the UFC and an impressive background in collegiate wrestling, Bo has achieved that dream, proudly donning his own cauliflower ear. A clear example of strength and persistence, its importance cannot be understated.

And so ‘The Eagle’ refuses to get rid of them, even if he has the chance. The former 155lbs juggernaut views his cauliflower ears as a badge of honor, a testament to being a true warrior. He has fully embraced them and has no intention of altering them, even after his retirement. In a podcast interview years ago, Khabib was asked whether he could still hear properly despite his cauliflower ear.

With his characteristic humility, he responded, “Of course,” before explaining why he never considered surgery to fix his ears. The Dagestani said, “I think you can fix it with surgery, but your ear would look even worse.” Although Khabib has retired from active competition in the Octagon, his proteges, Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov, are already making a name for themselves. Not only are they breaking records and achieving new milestones, but they are also gaining a level of fame that rivals ‘The Eagle’s’ iconic cauliflower ear.

As ‘Team Khabib’ gears up for UFC 311, both fighters are determined to prove their worth, displaying their courage and dedication while striving to honor the legacy of their legendary mentor.
