Chimaev had a highly anticipated fight lined up against Paulo Costa at UFC 294, scheduled for October 21st. Unfortunately, Costa suffered an injury, forcing him to step away from the bout. However, the situation took an unexpected turn that had the fans excited, when Kamaru Usman stepped in to replace Costa. Regardless, this turn of events may have bolstered Chimaev’s chances of earning a title shot.

Khamzat Chimaev has wanted to have a title fight for a long now. The Russian-born fighter last graced the octagonal arena in his fight against Kevin Holland which he won. Chimaev was supposed to face Paulo Costa but now he will be facing Kamaru Usman and with this, his chances of getting a title shot have been solidified.

The newly minted CEO of UFC, Dana White confirmed on Thursday that the winner of UFC 294’s co-main event, Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kamaru Usman, will get a middleweight title shot. it is no surprise for combat fans since both Usman and Chimaev are seasoned fighters and have earned this.

Chimaev finds himself but a heartbeat away from securing his coveted title shot. In stark contrast, Usman, a relative newcomer to the middleweight division, embarks on a path less traversed. Chimaev has already experienced the excitement of middleweight fights, and with just 11 days’ notice to prepare for the upcoming bout, Usman faces a challenging situation, However, Usman might be looking forward to changing just that to his advantage.

Kamaru Usman is looking for champ-champ status

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ had tirelessly lobbied for a bout against Chimaev for several months. It was only when the situation became urgent that the UFC finally conceded that this was a match-up deserving of attention. Usman stated that it was like the UFC only acknowledged his fight due to the sudden urgency. While having an interview with TMZ Sports he added ” The crazy thing is, I hate being put in this position because this was supposed to be the fight.”

Down in the conversation, he dropped a bombshell when he stated that he wanted to defeat Chimaev and go for double champ status. He added “ “I might just mic-drop. Grab the middleweight belt, go down, grab the welterweight belt, then mic-drop. What a way to go out, though? I want both. I’ve always wanted champ-champ, but what a way — to go get the top one then come back down and get — no one’s ever done that! That would be crazy.”
