Fighter pay is the most discussed topic in the world of MMA. Moreover, the most commonly drawn comparison is with boxing. This discussion started again with Alvarez getting millions and someone like Kamaru Usman not even touching the seven-digit mark.

Often times we hear MMA fighters bring up the fighter pay issue. Several fighters have talked about being paid less compared to boxers who make exponentially higher amounts from their fight. Whenever the salary of a fighter is released, posts start to surface on the internet leading to a never-ending debate.

A similar picture has been floating around the internet since the Canelo vs GGG fight purse has come out. The post compares the salary of one of boxing’s top stars against former MMA P4P king, Kamaru Usman.

• “Yeah and the rest of the fighters of that boxing card get 0$”

• “Yeah, but did Canelo get free Rock shoes?”

• “At the end kamaru probably made around 2.25 mil but it’s still a huge difference”

• “Boxing has been around for over a century and mma has only been around for about 30 or so years. Give MMA more time they’ll be earning way more 10-20 years from now”

• “Dana really keeps 40 million for himself and divides 5 million to the fighters”

Canelo Alvarez shares his thoughts on the wage gap

Canelo also shared his opinion on the pay disparity between MMA and boxing fighters. In an interview with GQ magazine, the boxer was answering fan questions on the internet. 

A question popped up that said, “Why do boxers still get paid more than MMA fighters.” Canelo was quick to respond to this question and put the burden on the promotion rather than the sport.

The Mexican said, “I think, in general, boxers don’t earn the same, each one earns differently. But, yes, I think boxers earn more. I don’t know why… I think in MMA there is only one promoter, one company that I think controls them more. So, I think that’s why.”
