Dustin Poirier and his battle with Staph

Poirier was diagnosed with a gruesome Staphylococcus infection. Athletes are especially prone to contracting a Staph infection; from locker rooms and interaction with other athletes. Without a doubt, it is highly contagious and extremely dangerous if left untreated. Poirier was, in fact, right to be scared, as the infection had a chance to spread to the greater parts of his leg.

The former interim lightweight champion was battling a strain of the bacterium that was not supposedly responding to antibiotics. This is common with a Staph infection; as the microbe can mutate and evolve at a fast rate. However, if one drug fails, the doctors prescribe a more potent medication for treatment.

Thankfully, the lightweight fighter got better after a different approach to antibiotic therapy and was released from the hospital on 7th December 2022. The world of combat sports definitely took a sigh of relief as the ‘Diamond’ revealed this on Twitter. He wrote, “Antibiotics are working. Getting outta the hospital tomorrow morning!” Surprisingly, he went straight to see his daughter after getting discharged.
