Social media allows fans easy access to celebrities and vice versa. While many stars successfully connect with their fan bases over social media, that isn’t always the case. This easy access also sometimes leaves athletes subject to the harsh scrutiny and ridicule of fans. This dynamic gives rise to ‘beef’ and other back-and-forths that keep the fighting world entertained outside of the Octagon. One such exchange occurred between an ex-fighter who is a friend of Khamzat Chimaev, and a ‘fan’.

The athlete recently took to X (formerly Twitter), to showcase his support for former Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling ahead of his fight against Sean O’Malley. He jokingly wrote, “Bet everything you have on Aljo tonight. I’ve got £134.45 net worth and it’s going on Aljo”. The humorous quip was probably aimed at emphasizing his faith in ‘Aljo’ Sterling. However, one fan read into the comment. Possibly referencing his retirement, the fan responded, “The sad thing is I genuinely don’t think he’s joking about the net worth bit”.
The dig at his net wealth left ex-UFC star Darren Till feeling competitive. The harmless joke in solidarity with ‘Funkmaster’ resulted in the creation of a proving ground. After the fan’s edgy tweet, Darren responded with a screenshot of his bank details. The screenshot reveals Darren Till’s bank balance of 1,007,824.55. The revelation of this huge sum by the ex-UFC star and friend of Khamzat Chimaev earned mixed reactions from fans.
Surprising move by Khamzat Chimaev teammate and ex-UFC fighter invites multiple reactions
One fan questioned Darren Till’s character. “Why tell people your business like that . Just screams that he is feeling insecure…”. Another fan chimed in admiration of the ex-UFC star’s wealth. They commented, “Not bad, and thats just one account lol. Doing better than most”. Some used the occasion to poke fun at his bet on ‘Funkmaster’ Sterling. Following his TKO loss to Sean O’Malley the fans joked about ‘The Gorilla’s misplaced faith. One fan said, “Bro lost it all betin on funk”. Another fan wrote, “FunkMaster left him with only the funk”.

Khamzat Chimaev has come under fire in the past for certain of his political ties. His former training partner and ex-Middleweight Darren too shares a similar criticism. Referencing his friendship with Daniel Kinahan, the alleged leader of Ireland’s largest drug trafficking ring, fans attempted to explain his bank balance. Amongst multiple voices, one said, “People do realIs that Till is associated with Daniel Kinahan right? That’s in all likelihood the reason why he’s not in the UFC anymore. It’s the exact same reason why Tyson Fury isn’t allowed into the states”.
Others took on more pragmatic outlooks. They criticized Till for leaking this screenshot containing his bank details. One user wrote, “My boy the account # and everything scammers about to have a field day”. But some found amusement in the whole exchange; a fan questioning a fighter and the fighter responding with a bank statement. The user wrote, “Darren till really made a joke tweet, got a reply from someone also joking, and then felt offended enough to post a pic of his bank balance. You can’t make this s**t up I swear”.

The humorous comment highlights how seemingly simple exchanges get heated and blown out of proportion on the internet. Irrespective of Daniel’s response to sharing details of his account, it is evident that the star is doing relatively well, as hinted at by his response. Social media also leaves room for speculation with some fans awaiting the re-entry of ‘The Gorilla’ in the UFC. Either way, the athlete seems to still be in public conversation thanks to this new narrative centered on faith and bank balances.
