UFC legend Jorge Masvidal also once recalled his younger days of street violence. Coming from a UFC fighter, the words say a lot about the reality of MMA. The ex-UFC fighter also went ahead to highlight a key difference between MMA fighting and street fighting. Coming from a professional fighter, the words can really be considered religiously true. Masvidal shared being born and growing up in Miami. He also gave a mental image of his shady neighborhood growing up.

Born to a Cuban father and a Peruvian mother, the fighter shares a rich Latin American heritage. Although, according to Masvidal, the neighborhood wasn’t particularly bad; he was still involved in a few incidents of street violence growing up. The video opens up with the legendary fighter sharing his experience with street fights.

‘Gamebred’ opened up about his childhood, “Miami, I grew up there till I was 14 and the environment wasn’t bad, just a bunch of kids like me, you know.” Even though, according to him, the environment was livable, there were some factors that pushed him towards street fights. The fights that Masvidal was involved in as a kid were brutal and deadly in nature. The ex-UFC fighter explains the major difference between a street fight and fighting in the octagon.

However, a street fight is a ‘do or die’ situation. It is a place where you don’t get second chances or a referee to save you. You may find yourself in a street fight even if you are a pacifist yourself. To make everything more uncertain, you can never know what weapon your opponent possesses.

According to Masvidal, there isn’t much you do against a knife or a gun. It doesn’t matter what sort of fighting style you have, in the end, you’re at the mercy of your offender’s weapon.

Even though it is true that martial arts cannot save you from a street fight, it can surely help you in various ways. The key to winning a street fight is to know that you will return physically hurt.
