Sean Strickland’s performance at UFC 312 has now raised a storm of scrutiny. After losing his title to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 297, the pair stepped into the Octagon in Sydney, Australia to settle the score. In trademark ‘Tarzan’ fashion, the build-up to the fight was filled with promises of ‘war’ and unrelenting violence.

However, Du Plessis turned in an exceptional performance, leaving Strickland battered and with a broken nose after 5-rounds. ‘Stillknocks’ walked away with the belt still around his waist, but for Strickland? His performance left fans and fighters alike questioning everything he claims to be. And no one took more offense to it than former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold!

Sean Strickland’s “true character” questioned by Luke Rockhold after lackluster UFC 312 performance

Luke Rockhold knows a thing or two about grit. The former middleweight king has endured his share of wars inside the cage and pushed through injuries, setbacks, and brutal knockouts. But what he saw from Strickland at UFC 312? That, to him, wasn’t the heart of a warrior.

In a heated interview on ‘The Ariel Helwani Show’, Rockhold didn’t hold anything back as he fired off by stating, “Gotta fight through the problems in life. You know what I mean? So if someone breaks your nose, you gotta fight like a f—- man and sack up.”

Rockhold wasn’t just upset about Strickland’s performance. He was calling out what he saw as hypocrisy. Strickland has built his reputation on being this unbreakable force, a fighter who welcomes the storm and walks through the fire. Yet, when adversity struck, Rockhold believed he saw something else entirely.

What was it? According to him, “You have a world title on the line. That’s all you want. That’s all you dreamed of. And you’re more worried about fixing your f—- nose than f—- winning and biting down on your mouthpiece and doing what you gotta do. I mean, it just shows your true character.”

This isn’t the first time Strickland has been accused of playing a role rather than being the man he claims to be. His words during press conferences and interviews stand in stark contrast to the jab-heavy defense-oriented style he displays inside the Octagon. As such, according to Rockhold, Sean Strickland’s entire brand is built on a foundation of bravado. He talks the talk, but when it’s time to put everything on the line, Rockhold believes he falls short every time.

Does Strickland deserve the backlash? Or is Rockhold being too harsh? The former champ pulled no punches, but the truth, as always, lies somewhere in the middle. According to Dana White, even in defeat, ‘Tarzan’ displayed qualities the UFC boss had to admire despite all the criticism surrounding the fight.

Love him or hate him, Sean Strickland isn’t easy to ignore. His brash personality, reckless trash talk, and wild gym stories make him one of the UFC’s most controversial figures. But inside the Octagon? That’s where Dana White sees something entirely different.

Despite Strickland’s lopsided loss to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 312, the UFC CEO walked away with an unexpected takeaway. While many focused on the blood, the broken nose, and the lack of urgency, White saw something else.

At the UFC 312 post-fight press conference, he stated, “The guy stays focused, keeps coming forward. There’s never any hint of how he acts outside the octagon when he’s in there. Absolute professional the whole time. It’s actually fascinating.”

With two losses to Du Plessis in the books, Strickland now faces an uphill climb back to title contention. But according to the UFC boss, “You can go into any combat sport and you’ve seen it. Nobody is more professional during the fight than this guy is. It’s fascinating.”

So, where does Sean Strickland truly stand? To Luke Rockhold—he’s a contradiction, a man whose words outpace his actions when it matters most. But then there’s Dana White, who sees something else entirely. A professional. A fighter who, despite the chaos he brings outside the cage, remains composed when the fists start flying. So, is Sean Strickland the relentless gladiator he claims to be? Or is Rockhold right to call him out? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!
