UFC 278 co-main event had a showdown between two of the best middleweights in the UFC. A returning former champion, Luke Rockhold fought young Brazilian contender Paulo Costa. The rust was visible in Rockhold’s performance, but the will to compete and stay inside the Octagon was even more clear.
The Eraser defeated the American Kickboxing Academy fighter. However, considering the three-year hiatus and the sheer heart of the 37-year-old former champion, there were no losers in the bout.

Coming into the bout, the 31-year-old Team Borracha product was on a two-fight losing streak. Thus, this win against a former champion will boost his confidence. Costa looked better than ever, but the story of the co-main event was around Luke Rockhold staying in the fight even after gassing out in the first round.
The former middleweight champion was putting his hands to the knees, his back to the fence, yet marched forward with straight lefts and spinning kicks to keep the Brazilian fighter from rushing in. In the third round, a blooded veteran even reversed a ground position to get into his guard and created a chaotic yet historic moment as he brushed some blood off his by rubbing his face with his counterpart.
The fans were mesmerized by the performance of both the fighters.

The bout was amazing from the start to finish. The display of skills and heart was unbelievable. Conor McGregor among many UFC athletes paid tribute to the bout.
After the bout, Rockhold admitted he’s ‘old’ to compete inside the Octagon. Even Joe Rogan and the former Strikeforce and middleweight champion had a moment during the Octagon interview.

This might be the last time fight fans witnessed a Rockhold contest. However, the middleweight didn’t hang his gloves inside the Octagon. Thus, it will be interesting to see what path he chooses in the upcoming days.
