There’s a new contender in the world of regional MMA promotions, and he’s ready to throw down. Enter Shawne Merriman, the former NFL star turned MMA aficionado, who has unleashed his own fighting extravaganza called Lights Out Xtreme Fighting. Interestingly, there has been a strong connection between NFL and MMA for some time. Many NFL stars like Greg Hardy have made a transition into mixed martial arts. In such a scenario, an MMA promotion launched by an NFL star sounds like a good idea.
Starting in 2019, the promotion did not host any event in 2022. However, it has made quite a comeback with 2 back-to-back thrilling fight nights. The next event is scheduled for July 2023, and the Merriman’s promotion also has a Fubo Sports Network broadcast deal in the bag. Recently, the NFL veteran appeared in an interview with MMA Junkie and discussed the future of his promotion.

Shawne Merriman oozes confidence while talking about his MMA promotion
Merriman stated that he sees through the smoke and mirrors of other promotions, recognizing that true success lies not in boastful proclamations but in delivering a top-notch product. With an exceptional roster and passionate fans, the NFL star believes his promotion will cross bigger milestones in the future.
According to the 39-year-old, Lights Out Xtreme Fighting aims to provide a platform for emerging talent, offering them a chance to shine under the spotlight. Further, Merriman claimed that in a sea of mediocrity, his promotion stands tall as one of the few gems in the industry.
“There’s a lot of smoke and mirrors about how well these promotions are doing. We’ve got great fighters, a great product, (and) the fans come out. We just want to continue to give these up-and-coming guys a place to be seen. Because believe it or not, there’s not a whole lot of great promotions out here. I know they talk like they are, but there’s not a whole lot of them. We want to be one of the quality ones.”
NFL stars transitioning to MMA?
However, Lights Out Xtreme Fighting is not just about showcasing up-and-coming fighters. It’s also about bridging the gap between two worlds: football and mixed martial arts. Merriman envisions a future where NFL stars make a seamless transition into the unforgiving world of MMA.

Having championed this idea for nearly a decade, he’s starting to see it become a reality as athletes like Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell, and Greg Hardy venture into the octagon. Merriman confidently predicted that the coming months will witness an influx of big-name NFL players joining the MMA ranks.
“It’s going to happen. I’ve been saying it for the last eight years. We’re starting to see Adrian Peterson, Le’Veon Bell, (and) Greg Hardy. We’re starting to see a lot of those guys make this transition. Watch over the next 12 to 24 months. Watch how many big-name NFL guys transition over to MMA”.
