Islam Makhachev is the new highlight of the MMA world. The 31-year-old Dagestani went on to become the new lightweight champion of the UFC after defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. Makhachev submitted Oliviera in the second round of the 5-round bout to win the title. But little does anyone know about his exhausting pre-fight weight cuts and training schedules.

In an episode of the ‘FULL SEND PODCAST’, Makhachev joined the hosts as the guest and revealed his strict hydration routine.

If calculated, the per pound water consumption of Makhachev in his pre-fight period is higher than even the NFL legend, ‘Tom Brady’. Brady is literally a ‘fitness freak’. He has also gone on to write a book about the ways of maintaining his fitness which is named, ‘The TB12 Method’.

Islam Makhachev went through a more gruesome process than Tom Brady

The newly crowned UFC Lightweight champion visited the ‘FULL SEND PODCAST’ house, where he was asked about his pre-fight schedule. Makhachev revealed a lot of things about his pre-fight schedule.

He was asked by one of the hosts, “This is your weight-cut week, right?”. Makhachev replied, “Yes. This is hard week, hard couple of days. But, part of the game”. Makhachev also sarcastically mocked his opponent Charles Oliveira, saying, “I am not Charles Oliveira. I have to cut weight”. He explained that this mockery was due to Oliveira previously missing weight previously for a title fight.

Another host questioned him, “How do you cut weight? Is it mentally tough?”. Makhachev iterated, “This is hard but this is not my first main event. That’s why I know this all game”. He went on, “Today I have to drink today 8 litres”. He was obviously referring to water.

Makachev continued, “I have to cut 6 more kilos and today I’m gonna drink 8 litres”. He looked a bit pale, which prompted one of the anchors to ask, “Are you tired?”. Makhachev replied, “Not so tired, but yeah, I’m not training hard now. Just diet make a little tired”.

Tom Brady’s fitness routine is hard to maintain as well

In his book, ‘The TB12 Method’ Tom Brady has revealed every secret to his fit persona. Brady established special stress on drinking adequate water for good health. Brady’s book says, “Drink at least one-half of your body weight in ounces of water every day.” Brady also mentioned that water was good for external beauty as well as internal health.

Generally, it accumulates to 112 ounces of water consumed by Brady in a day. But he has also written that, on a physically enduring day, his water consumption may go up to 300 ounces, which amounts to about 8.5 litres. The fact to be noted here is that Tom Brady weighs around, 225lbs compared to Makhachev’s 155lbs.

Hence, it can be easily calculated that Islam Makhachev consumes more water per pound of his body weight than Tom Brady. The horrendous weight-cut process of fighters is well-known to every MMA fan. It can be said that Islam needs more hydration for this exhausting process, although he needs to shed it as well.

The coveted scrap between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in 2002 was when I realized the passion for combat sports within my family. My interest in combat sports began watching scripted pro wrestling shows. It was my father who directed me towards combat sports and it wasn’t until the late 2010s that I discovered the world of MMA and the UFC. Like many of you, I too, tuned in for the infamous Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor bout live on October 6, 2018. Being an ardent fan of the UFC (and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier), I was always looking to have conversations about the same with others. But to my disappointment, I hardly found any followers of the sports to interact with. So I took it upon myself to do my part in popularizing the thrill and the agony behind the purest form of unarmed combat. At EssentiallySports, I try to bring the readers closer to the athletes and focus my coverage on exploring the human side of these martial artists. I’m a musician during my time free from reporting MMA. I operate as the lead vocalist of a rock band that aims to make their mark among the audiences with their original alternative-hard rock songs.
