When we think about the UFC, the first name that always comes to mind is Conor McGregor. The Irishman achieved impossible feats in the octagon, even holding belts at two different weight classes at one time. Although McGregor is such an important figure in the promotion, let us look back at when he demanded shares in the company in 2016.

Back in 2016, after winning the bout against opponent Eddie Alvarez, McGregor announced that he wanted a stake in the company. According to McGregor, he earned a stake in the company after producing the four biggest PPVs in UFC history at the time.

He said, “Who owns the company now? There’s people [who] have shares in the company… celebrities. Conan O’Brien owns shares of the UFC nowadays. Where’s my share? Where’s my equity?” He wanted the new owners to discuss shares in the company with him.

He continued, “I want what I deserve, what I’ve earned. They’ve got to come talk to me now. I’ve got both belts, a chunk of money, and a little family on the way. You want me to stick around and keep doing what I’m doing, let’s talk, but I want ownership now. I want [an] equal share. I want what I deserve – what I’ve earned.”

Going into the bout, McGregor was the favorite, while Alvarez was the underdog. Round 1 started with Alvarez throwing leg kicks at McGregor, which didn’t seem to slow down the Irishman’s movement. McGregor landed a clean strike with his left hand, which dropped Alvarez but wasn’t enough to finish him.

Alvarez continued the fight and lived to see the second round. Unfortunately for him, this is where the story ended. Alvarez leaned in for a punch, which McGregor dodged and then countered using his left cross. This was the start of the end, as McGregor followed this strike with a right hook and a second cross to finish off Alvarez.
