The world of MMA became a lot more popular when the UFC came to the scene and started to shake things up. They changed the game and then, following their footsteps, a lot of other promotions and agencies came up. Today, there are a lot of promotions that boast a really good roster and are in competition with the UFC.
PFL or Professional Fighters League is another promotion that was invented in 2017 and launched in the year 2018. Since then, they have been doing pretty well for themselves and giving the UFC stiff competition. In fact, UFC lost its former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou to the PFL after the Cameroonian hard-hitter decided to take his interests to PFL for a much bigger paycheck and more contractual freedom. And while the MMA community might hail Ngannou for his move, it seems UFC commentator Joe Rogan and former UFC fighter Dan Henderson have some complaints about the PFL.

Ever since its inception, PFL has been making waves in the MMA world, thanks to some really amazing and talented fighters that they have signed onto their roster. However, it seems UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan has a few things to say about the PFL and its scoring system.
“Well, it certainly would be exciting. I think the options that would be interesting are, one fifteen-minute round, instead of three fives. I think that would be very interesting. And then a tournament. That would also be very interesting. If they decided to – I mean, if someone wants to stand out from another organization, like the PFL or what else…” said Joe Rogan while talking to Dan Henderson.

Then, he clarified what exactly he has a problem with when it comes to the PFL and its scoring system. “Like the PFL’s got some weird point system that they do that I don’t really understand. You get a certain amount of points for a submission and a certain amount of points for a KO, and it’s like you’re ahead in the score.“, he said. Interestingly, this was not the first time the JRE host openly criticized the PFL’s league format’s scoring system.
Back in 2021, when he was talking to Don Frye, Rogan had a similar sentiment for the PFL’s scoring system. “Even for me, who’s a big fan of the sport, I can’t follow their system. You got great fighters but you’re confusing the sh*t out of people with this wacky system,” Rogan told Frye.

In the same episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with Dan Henderson, Joe Rogan openly said that big MMA promotions should come up because that ensures healthy competition and fair pay for the athletes as well.
Ngannou left the UFC back in 2022 owing to failed contract negotiations with UFC CEO Dana White. Rogan said that it would be really interesting if the promotion had offered more money to The Predator. That would have given Ngannou a couple of tough options to choose from. Apparently, Francis Ngannou made around $10 million in his boxing bout against Tyson Fury.

If that is the kind of purse that PFL is willing to offer to its fighters, it’s only a matter of time before PFL enters the big leagues and takes on other MMA promotions head-on.
