Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is stepping into the ring like never before. But this time, it’s not just punches and power moves; he’s bringing pain, vulnerability, and real-life drama to the big screen in The Smashing Machine. Johnson plays the legendary UFC fighter Mark Kerr. The first official trailer is out now, and fans are already buzzing about it sweeping up all the awards.

The movie is directed by Benny Safdie—one half of the dynamic Safdie Brothers duo behind Uncut Gems. This project marks Benny’s first solo project. Joining Johnson in the film is Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s partner, Dawn Staples. This is her second time working with Johnson after they starred together in Disney’s Jungle Cruise. However, unlike that film, this time the tone is much more serious.

Safdie dives headfirst into the gritty life of Kerr, a powerful MMA fighter from the late ’90s, detailing his highest highs and the lowest lows. From 1997 to 2009, Kerr ruled the sport. He won four ADCC World Championships and racked up wins in brutal MMA fights. But behind the scenes, things weren’t as glorious. His story was first told in a 2002 HBO documentary also titled The Smashing Machine, which focused on his battles with substance abuse and problems in his relationships with both his girlfriend and his coaches.

And this is precisely why ‘The Rock” chose this role. Speaking to Variety in 2024, he said, “I’m at a point in my career where I want to push myself in ways that I’ve not pushed myself in the past. I’m at a point in my career where I want to make films that matter, that explore a humanity and explore struggle [and] pain.”

The transformation is striking. Johnson shared the trailer on X, saying, “Excited to share the official trailer for Benny Safdie’s THE SMASHING MACHINE, starring Dwayne Johnson and Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt. In theaters October 3rd.”

And how did fans react? Well, couldn’t help but applaud his efforts. Let’s see what the community had to say about Dwayne Johnson wearing the skin of Mark Kerr.

The responses to Johnson’s post were filled with praise. One fan replied, “Looks awesome. I can smell some awards cooking.” This is a clear departure from the typical Dwayne Johnson film—packed with action, explosions, and over-the-top stunts. The Smashing Machine signals a turning point in his career, as he steps into a far more grounded and emotionally demanding role. While longtime fans know him for his physical power, this film gives him the chance to show a different kind of strength.

Another fan said, “I just watched the trailer for The Smashing Machine—it’s absolutely incredible! At first, I didn’t even recognize The Rock, which gave me a good laugh, but wow, he’s phenomenal. Can’t wait for the release!”

The trailer begins with a shot of Johnson as Kerr, bruised and exhausted in a clinic. He wears a dark wig, full facial prosthetics, and speaks in a distinct Ohio accent. The makeup and prosthetics were designed by Kazu Hiro, a two-time Oscar winner known for his work in Darkest Hour and Bombshell, making him look unrecognizable as the MMA legend. One fan wrote, “He’s coming for that Oscar.”

Another reason this movie could be bagging awards is the production behind it. A24 has built a strong reputation for making powerful, award-winning films. Their past projects include Lady Bird, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Moonlight. A24 also has a loyal fanbase and is known for supporting bold, character-driven stories.

Someone else added, “First wrestler to win an Oscar.” Wrestlers crossing over into films is nothing new. John Cena has done well in both comedy and action, with roles in The Marine, Blockers, F9, and Peacemaker. Dave Bautista has received praise for deeper roles in films like Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. But so far, no professional wrestler has ever won or been nominated for an Academy Award.

Another fan said, “Wow! That was an amazing trailer. I’ll be in theaters watching this. This is an invite to being nominated for all the awards.”

Not just fans, but UFC legend Mark Coleman, who was a friend and training partner of Kerr, also shared his thoughts on the project. On Instagram, he wrote, “Sure is a beautiful day. Life is great. The filming of the ‘Smashing Machine’ With the King of action movies @therock! Go check out the trailer. @thesmashingmachinemovie What a pleasure very kind, humble man, the aura around him is something special. He’s truly a giant in so many ways. Set your goal high people, there’s nothing you can’t achieve if you put your mind to it, dream big and then go for it.”

Set to release in theaters on October 3, 2025, The Smashing Machine tells the tough, emotional story of a fighter, both in the cage and in his personal life. This could be the most serious role of Dwayne Johnson’s career. Could it also be the one that earns him his first Oscar nomination? Let us know in the comments.
