Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway are all set to lock horns inside the Octagon for the second consecutive time.

The two will battle for the Featherweight title for the second time after ‘The Great’ won it from Holloway back in December.

Coincidentally, the card will also feature the Featherweight legend, Jose Aldo. ‘Junior’ comes in contention as one of the greatest Featherweights of all time. He will take on Petr Yan for the Bantamweight title in his second-ever Bantamweight bout.

With ‘Blessed’ on the same card as Aldo, and possibly heading towards another championship reign, one has to ask whether Aldo still remains the greatest Featherweight ever. After all, Holloway, too, has had quite the journey in the division.

Alexander Volkanovski answered the question in an interview with Dave Schmulenson, aka ‘The Shmo’, on Fight Island. Alexander said,

“I have to go with Aldo. To have so many defenses in a division? You know what I mean? To be so dominant in his era for so long? You can’t take that away from him.”

Jose Aldo- The Featherweight legend

Surely enough, Aldo was the UFC’s first-ever Featherweight champion after the absorption of the division from WEC. He had only one loss on his record when he became the WEC (later promoted to UFC) Featherweight champion.

He defended the belt for 9 consecutive times (2- WEC; 7- UFC), defeating fighters like Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes, and many more. After winning the title from Mike Brown in 2009, he lost the title to Conor McGregor only in 2015. Thus, he accumulated one of the greatest title reigns ever, lasting 6 years.

However, that was not the end of his title fights. He regained the status of undisputed Featherweight champion after his fight with Frankie Edgar. However, he lost the title to Holloway at UFC 212. And it was from here that the era of Max Holloway began.

Alexander Volkanovski respects Max Holloway

Holloway became the UFC Featherweight champion at the age of 25. Not only did he beat the legendary Aldo for the title, but he also defended it successfully for the first time against the Brazilian.

He went on to defend it against Frankie Edgar and Brian Ortega, before losing it out to Alexander Volkanovski.

Therefore, still at the tender age of 28, Holloway packs a lot of credibility. And it is evident by the Volkanovski spoke of him, although he denied him the GOAT status. He said,

“Again, I respect ‘Blessed’ Holloway. Even though he is my opponent, I’ve got a lot of respect for him. He has done some great things in that division. But, I don’t think he has done enough to take the GOAT status.”

Concluding what he had to say, Alexander spoke of what he aims to achieve in the future.

“I obviously want that GOAT status. And I’m chasing the Aldo GOAT status.”

Looks like ‘The Great’ aims to become the greatest of all time indeed. He is going after the GOAT status, and will definitely get much closer to it if he manages to put down Holloway.

Who do you think will walk out with the larger legacy on Saturday?
