Khabib Nurmagomedov is set to put his undisputed status on the line against interim champion Justin Gaethje. ‘The Highlight’ earned his way to the top after finishing Tony Ferguson in a stellar performance at UFC 249. Moreover, he managed to stuff Ferguson’s 12 fight win streak in the weight class and set himself up for contention.
Khabib Nurmagomedov: A legacy defined
The 28-0 fighter from Dagestan has become one of the most popular fighters in the entire sport of MMA as it stands. His monstrous pressure and dominance under the bright lights of the cage have endeared him to the MMA community. Additionally, he has proven to be a massive pay-per-view draw within the promotion.
However, just a month removed from the announcement of his 29th professional fight, Khabib’s father passed away. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was a pioneer in the MMA landscape and helped build the sport from the ground up. Not to mention, he was a huge motivating factor for Khabib to continue on his path of dominance.
Following the loss of his father, speculations were rampant that ‘The Eagle’ would retire from active competition. Chiefly, MMA fans and pundits predicted that the champion would fight twice more in his career, going to a possible 30-0. The final opponent as speculated by fans was expected to be consensus GOAT Georges St-Pierre.
The aforementioned speculation seemingly has come to fruition based on Nurmagomedov’s comments. The high caliber grappler expressed a latent desire to end off his historic career against GSP. The former two-division champion in ‘Rush’ St-Pierre is still widely considered to be the best to have ever done it.
UFC President Dana White has gone on record to say that he would be open to building the aforementioned mega-fight. Combat sports fans across the world salivate at the thought of seeing the two titans of MMA duke it out.
