Jorge Masvidal (35-13-0) is coming off a fighter of the year contender campaign. Gamebred has seemingly become one of the biggest names in the world of MMA. But according to Kamaru Usman, the American fighter does not deserve all the hype he has been getting recently. He said, “Of course I want to fight Masvidal. There’s a lot of hype on him. I want to get paid, too… How is he the No. 1 contender? Because of the hype?”

Masvidal has made his wish of fighting Conor McGregor clear for quite some time. He values the fight more than a pass at the UFC Welterweight title, primarily because of the cheque he would collect. However,  UFC President Dana White reported that a fight between Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman will take place sometime in July.

The Nigerian Nightmare is coming off of a streak of 15 consecutive wins, with his latest win coming against Colby Covington in the headliner at UFC 245. The win came by a knockout in the 5th round. Usman’s last loss came at the hands of Jose Caceres way back in 2013 by submission.

Usman further feels that Masvidal does not deserve a shot at the title, as he has not beaten the top fighters in the division. He said,

“You can’t tell me he’s beaten the top guys in the top five to prove he’s the No. 1 contender.”

But that may not necessarily be the case. Masvidal has taken on and emerged victorious against the likes of Ben Askren, Darren Till, Donald Cerrone and most recently Nate Diaz.

The American has suffered terrible setbacks, coming up short against Demian Maia and succumbing a loss by split decision. Similarly, he took an L against Stephen Thompson. Fortunately, it seems like these losses have turned him into a more aggressive fighter.
