Daniel Cormier wanted to end his career with the UFC belt wrapped around his waist. However, that couldn’t happen at UFC 252. Cormier lost a hard-fought fight against the heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. Following the loss, Cormier has now penned a message looking back on his time inside the Octagon.

A former two-division champion, Cormier went toe-to-toe with Miocic to determine the UFC heavyweight GOAT. Miocic’s game plan trumped that of the former Olympian. His strategy of pushing his opponent to the cage every time he wrapped up an underhook played to his advantage. Cormier also made very little use of his wrestling.

Be it as it may, if the result doesn’t add much to Cormier’s legacy, it doesn’t take a lot away from it either. Being a former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, he had a long stretch of fights as a light heavyweight. He even became the UFC champion during that run.

Cormier posted a message on Instagram thanking everyone who was a part of his journey. From friends and family to his coaches and fans, Cormier expressed his gratitude to everyone – even his opponent, Stipe Miocic.

Daniel Cormier, in all likelihood, will never return to the UFC Octagon

Even before the loss, Cormier had cleared that this was his last fight inside the Octagon. However, UFC President Dana White was adamant otherwise. He said that win or lose, Cormier will have a reason to return to the Octagon.

However, following the loss, DC told fellow UFC commentator Joe Rogan that this was the end of the road for him. There was also the issue with his left eye out of which he couldn’t see anything. It was later reported to be a torn cornea, most probably due to an eye poke from Stipe during the fight.

Even Dana White had to change his stance regarding Cormier, who also moonlights as a UFC commentator. Maybe White just didn’t want one of the best ambassadors of the sport to go out just yet. However, if DC wishes to hang up his gloves, he has earned every right to do the same as and when he desires.
