The pairing of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is always able to find new ways to not fall through. On one hand, Dana White is trying his best to salvage the card. On the other hand, Khabib has said that he is doubtful about making it to UFC 249. However, with Khabib out, another former interim champ, Dustin Poirier, has expressed his desire to step up on short notice.

Poirier told Ariel Helwani that he is ready to step in the Octagon on April 18th. He is waiting for the UFC to call him up.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is unable to leave Russia. This is due to a travel ban imposed owing to the outbreak of COVID-19. The Lightweight kingpin announced the news in an Instagram live session. After the news broke out, several fighters have offered to step up for the fight.

One of the most surprising names to come up for the fight was Jorge Masvidal. However, the biggest hurdle in that fight would be the difference in the weight class. Nonetheless, the fans would love to witness a battle between Ferguson and Masvidal for the BMF belt.

Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, Poirier had travelled back to his home in Louisiana. Before that, he was going to enter fight camp for his upcoming fight at UFC San Diego. Hence, despite the lockdown, he was still training from his home itself.

Poirier last stepped inside the Octagon against the man he is trying to replace. He ended up losing the fight via submission. Subsequently, he underwent hip surgery to repair some damage that had been pestering him. The surgery also kept him out the action.
