For the past few months, Conor McGregor has been in news majorly for his efforts against battling Coronavirus. However, now as the UFC looks back to restore normalcy in business, its biggest draw is hinting at a comeback. In his latest attempt, he has aimed to mock and pick a fight against former interim champ Dustin Poirier. However, “The Diamond” returned the favor with a roast of his own.

McGregor questioned the UFC Lightweight rankings that had Dustin Poirier ahead of him. In a tweet that he deleted almost instantly, Conor mocked Dustin by calling him a “pea”. He has been using the nickname since the build-up to their first fight at UFC 178.

However, he was more furious at the UFC rankings than he was at Poirier. This was because the rankings had Poirier ahead of McGregor. While “The Notorious One” is ranked No. 3, the fighter he defeated six years ago acquires the spot just ahead of him. The Irish megastar believes the UFC is playing a game.

Conor’s tweet didn’t sit very well with the former interim UFC Lightweight champ. Despite being deleted, Poirier got wind of the tweet and he replied instantly. He accused the former double champ of fighting handpicked opponents.

Can a rematch with Dustin Poirier be the next fight for Conor McGregor?

During their first meeting, McGregor floored Poirier within the opening two minutes of the fight. However, both of them have come a long way since the loss. McGregor rode the momentum he received from the fight and went on to conquer not just one but two divisions.

Poirier, on the other hand, took it as a wake-up call and moved up to Lightweight. Dustin went on a run himself and ended up defeating Max Holloway for the interim belt at 155-pounds. Hence, what is certain is that Poirier has improved significantly since his first meeting with McGregor.

A rematch between them makes the most sense now than ever before. Poirier is coming off a failed bid to capture the belt. McGregor is looking to establish himself in the division once again so that he can get a rematch with Khabib or fight for the belt.

As per Dana White, Conor McGregor is very much on board with the idea of fighting at Fight Island. Although it would kill the UFC President to do an event that involves McGregor without an audience. The Irish megastar is a definitive sell for the public.

At the same time, White should also consider the grand opening that his ambitious project of fight island can receive if it debuts with a card that is headlined by Conor.
