Rising middleweight Edmen Shahbazyan plans to capture UFC gold at a very young age. “The Golden Boy” wants to break Jon Jones’ record by becoming the youngest champion in the company’s history.
Shahbazyan is one of the fastest-growing prospects in MMA. He made his pro debut in 2017 and extended his record to 11-0 in November 2019. Ten of his Eleven victories ended via stoppages, and all of them came in the first round. Shahbazyan last competed at UFC 244; he defeated Marvin Vettori via a head kick KO.

The American fighter feels that he has much more to achieve in the sport. And he wants to do it quickly. Shahbazyan has already stated his intentions of becoming the youngest champion in UFC history, a record that is held by reigning UFC light heavyweight champion, Jon Jones.
Edmen Shahbazyan on Jon Jones’ record
In a recent video uploaded by ESPN MMA, Shahbazyan said:
“Dreaming big is the best thing. So my first dreaming big goal was to make it to UFC when I was like 12 years old. Now it’s to be the youngest world champion. The youngest champion was Jon Jones at 23 years and eight months. So I will be 23 in November, then I have eight months after that. So that puts me in like around July of next year.

“Reaching that goal would mean so much to me and my culture and the Armenians around the world. And I will be happy to represent them in such a good way.”
The Coronavirus pandemic could delay Shahbazyan’s plans. Should he get past Derek Brunson on August 1, he will have to fight a couple of times before fighting for the middleweight strap. Injuries and unavailability of opponents can affect his goal.
Besides that, the middleweight division is a murderer’s row. It seems like a difficult task for now. However, it is not impossible.
