Aljamain Sterling has been campaigning for a title shot against recently crowned bantamweight champ Petr Yan. While Yan acknowledges Sterling’s presence as the next possible challenger, he never fails to engage in a Twitter banter with him.
Aljamain Sterling was riding a four-fight win streak heading into UFC 250. Following a dominant win over Cory Sandhagen, his win streak extended to five. After former champ Henry Cejudo retired, the belt at 135-pounds was left vacant. The UFC booked Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo in a fight for the bantamweight gold. However, a lot of fans believed that Sterling should have fought Yan, instead of Aldo.

Regardless, Yan went on to defeat Aldo and grab the bantamweight belt. Meanwhile, Sterling continued to chase the spot of the next challenger by going at the Russian on social media.

While fans believe Sterling is the next one in line, Dana White isn’t so sure about the same. Following UFC Fight Island 2, a reporter asked the UFC President if Sterling was next in line. White’s response was lukewarm at the best.
“I don’t know. He’s in there. He’s one of them,” Dana White said.
Yan, after listening to the same, took to Twitter to poke fun at Sterling.

White’s reaction to Sterling being the No. 1 contender in the division is not new. Even after UFC 251, he’d stick to his “I don’t know” statement. Probably this is because the UFC supremo is too engrossed with what’s going on Fight Island. He maintains his statement that once he and the matchmakers get back to the USA, they can figure things out.

Nonetheless, White’s statement provided the necessary ammunition to Yan so that can fire his shots at Sterling.

Apart from Sterling, who is the No. 2 ranked bantamweight in the UFC, the only option that makes more sense ranking wise is Marlon Moraes. The No. 1 ranked bantamweight last fought and won a controversial split decision against Jose Aldo. He was also the last fighter to hand Aljamain Sterling a loss inside the Octagon.
