Khabib Nurmagomedov will face Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in one of the most anticipated bouts in UFC history. The company held a press conference in which things got heated rapidly. After the presser, Khabib sat down with Brett Okamoto to talk about his upcoming fight.
On April 18 2020, two of the greatest lightweights will lock horns inside the octagon. Tony Ferguson, who is on a 12 fight win streak will face off against the undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Tony is an elite striker with impressive victories over some of the best lightweights in the world.
Tony’s last fight was against Donald Cerrone in June 2019 in which he picked apart Cerrone on the feet with his striking.
Tony’s last loss came through Michael Johnson. Since then, nobody has been able to keep up with Tony. He crumbled his opponents with his non-stop offence, whether it was on the feet or the ground.
However, Tony may have finally met his match. Khabib Nurmagomedov, a wrestler with an insane win streak of 28 wins (12 in the UFC). “The Eagle” has kept his undefeated record intact in the most dangerous division of the UFC.
Khabib Nurmagomedov explains why he needs to fight Tony Ferguson
This is not the first time the UFC has booked the fight. Tony and Khabib were scheduled to fight four times before. However, both men pulled out twice due to injuries and other issues.
In a sit-down interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Khabib said:
“ For my legacy, on my list, I need Tony Ferguson. I need this guy’s name”
Although Khabib has conquered almost everyone at the top, he does not have the name “Tony Ferguson” on his list. Defeating Tony will be Khabib’s greatest achievement. Both men have fought and defeated big names in the UFC. Some of them are common opponents while others are unique.
A victory for either man will put them at the pinnacle of the sport.
“I put this guy’s (Tony Ferguson) name on the list, then who else? Nobody can say nothing.” Khabib told Okamoto.
Indeed, a win over Tony will put Khabib in the Greatest of All Time list. But doing that will be difficult. Unlike his previous opponents, Tony is not afraid to fight on his back. “El Cucuy” strives off his back with his slick submission game and nasty elbows which often busts his opponents’ face.
It’s a tough matchup for both men. However, the fighter who imposes his dominance first will prevail.
