Both acting and MMA have taken Bas Rutten all over the world. He has seen everything. And throughout his time in MMA, he has collected some very interesting stories to share.

Rutten recently shared one such story while in conversation with Dennis Shkuratov and Kacper Rosolowski on Submission Radio. He recalls the time when he took on 3 men claiming to be Navy SEALS in the famous Roppongi district of Tokyo.

“I fought one time three [guys] in Japan. They were claiming they were Navy SEALs, they had Navy SEALs tattoos on their bodies, but they weren’t Navy SEALs. I 100 percent guarantee they’re not, because I train the SEALs and they are not guys like that. Trust me,” explained the former MMA fighter.

Accompanied by Frank Shamrock and Guy Mezger, Rutten recalls that he saw three men walking up to the bar while pushing and shoving everyone in their way.

“They came in, and what happened was, I was standing and I see these — it’s called MoTown, the bar is called in Roppongi in Tokyo, and it’s a long bar — I see so many people flying left and right. I look, and there is three guys, and they pushed all these little Japanese people to the side and they marched their way through.” 

“I’m standing in the middle, I was just looking away, I didn’t want to look at them. Sure enough, they pushed me as well. I said, ‘hey guys, come on, man, what are you guys doing?’”

“And right away they surrounded me, [saying] ‘you want to go, man? You want to go? You wanna go bring it outside?’,” recalls Rutten. 

How Guy Mezger Warned Them Against Fighting Bas Rutten

Evidently enough, the three men were no fans, considering how they did not recognize some of the most famous MMA fighters of that time. Rutten admits that Mezger tried to warn the three men about picking a fight with professional fighters. Especially Rutten.

“Guy [Mezger] walked up, and he said, ‘hey guys, we’re all professional fighters’. And they said, ‘oh, we don’t give a crap’ [Guy] says, ‘yeah, I know, I understand that, but from all of us, [Rutten is] the worst guy to pick a fight with, you shouldn’t do this right now’.” says Rutten.

Refusing to back down they took the party outside where one of the “SEALS” offered to let Rutten choose his opponent. To which he responded, “I’ll fight all three of you, what about that?”

And then Rutten claims to have wrapped everything up rather quickly, unsurprisingly. He recalls how two of the three men dropped instantly. However, Rutten admits that he did not want to knock out the last one, because Rutten wanted to teach him a lesson. 

He decided to submit him. However, after tapping out to one armbar and one knee-bar, the man kept coming at Rutten. Following which everyone asked Rutten to choke him out. So he chokes the man out cold. 

“We laid him on the ground. I believe we just pulled his pants down and we just waiting for him to wake up. That’s what I believe we just had to do. And of course, he got very embarrassed when he woke up.”

“If it would have been in the time now, we could have made a Facebook post or a YouTube post,” said Rutten as he explained how they taught the man a lesson.
