Stephen Thompson is one of the veteran welterweight fighters in the UFC and takes a keen interest in the fighters sitting above him in the rankings. But despite names like Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, he opines that Leon Edwards is the most deserving of a title shot. This is because he sees ‘Rocky’ as someone who can beat fighters at their own game.

‘Wonder Boy’ said, “I think he is the scariest out of the division, really is. Every time you see this guy fight, he gets better. He comes into the UFC as a striker, but he is out wrestling and out grappling guys like RDA”

Dos Anjos was Edwards’ latest fight, and the latter claimed a (50-45,49-46,49-46) unanimous decision win over the former lightweight champion. Subsequently, Thompson highlighted the #3 ranked welterweight’s fight against Vicente Luque at Fight Night: Manuwa vs Anderson in 2017. He said, “Even Vicente Luque, they fought, and he was out wrestling him and taking him down and controlling him on the ground.”

‘Wonder Boy’ opined that Edwards improves with every single fight. He added that these were the fighters that one had to study and watch out for. This is because an opponent may not know what to expect when stepping into the octagon against them.

Could the UFC book Stephen Thompson against Leon Edwards?

This is a match that could be seen as an option, as ‘Wonder Boy’ is sixth in the division and doesn’t have a fight scheduled. It will allow Leon Edwards to face the highest-ranked available opponent and get a fight under his belt in 2020. However, when asked about potentially fighting ‘Rocky’, Thompson revealed that he wasn’t keen on it. He said, “not really if I’m being honest.”

The statement comes despite the 37-year-old having nothing to lose and possibly propelling himself into title contention if he were to secure a win.
