The silver of leaving American Top Team for Colby Covington is that now he can easily fight Jorge Masvidal. Had they been training out of the same gym, a fight would have come with its share of complications. However, Covington will now have no hurdles in settling his beef with his former friend.

Colby’s choice of words for teammates such as Masvidal, Poirier, and Joanna possibly led to his departure from ATT. Unlike the other two, Masvidal and Covington fight in the same weight class. Given their respective positions in the 170-pounds weight class would make a lot of sense. Moreover, given the history between them, the fight can be a massive event for the UFC.

Colby Covington is also of the mindset that the Octagon is the perfect way for the two to settle their differences.

“Absolutely, I do feel like it needs to be settled in the cage,” Covington told MMA Junkie. “But at the same time, if he doesn’t settle it in the cage, it will only be one reason and one person why it didn’t get settled in the cage – and that’ll be because of him. So if he tucks his tail in between his legs and runs away like the good little (expletive) that he is – he knows I’m his daddy, he knows I gave him so many spankings – so if he runs away, fans will know he’s a coward and he’s scared to fight.”

Further, Covington addressed Masvidal as a ’50-50 journeyman’ who is all hype. Irrespective of his hate for Masvidal, Colby is still keeping an eye out for a rematch against divisional kingpin Kamaru Usman.

“Make no mistake about it: I’m fighting ‘Street Judas’ Masvidal. I’m going to fight ‘Marty Fake Newsman,’” Covington said. “It doesn’t matter which order.”

If Covington fails to get a chance to settle scores with Masvidal inside the Octagon, he is more than happy to fight him on the streets. From a fan’s perspective, the bout is as perfect as it gets. Masvidal has a good takedown defense that can help him stuff the takedowns by Covington. Moreover, he has a more crisp striking displayed in his last three fights.

Who do you think comes out on top in a fight between Masvidal and Colby Covington?
