Henry Cejudo called time on his MMA career at UFC 249 after beating Dominick Cruz to retain his championship. Subsequently, ‘Triple C’ was removed from the UFC Rankings and stripped of the title. As a result, fans have gone into overdrive, predicting fights and speculating which fighters could compete for the recently vacated title. However, Dana White ended all rumors and made a blockbuster announcement.

He said, “And I’ll break this right here, right now. My people are probably gonna kill me for this one. But uh, Cejudo has retired. So we’re talking right now about Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo for the vacant title. And uhm… we don’t have a date or a place set for that. But that’s the fight we’re looking at right now.”

The potential fight sees 3rd ranked UFC Bantamweight Petr Yan leapfrog Marlon Moraes in title considerations. However, this can be attributed to his 6 fight win streak in the UFC.

Meanwhile, ‘Magic’ could be peeved as he beat Aldo last December. However, the Brazilian had the title shot by rights. He was to appear at the main event the original UFC 250 at Sao Paulo against Henry Cejudo. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus travel restrictions, he pulled out.

Both Yan and Aldo are not based in the United States. As travel restrictions are set to hold for the foreseeable future, it means that the fight, if it goes ahead, will most certainly take place on Fight Island.

The revelation certainly raises the stakes for another bout in the division set for UFC 250. It features 2nd ranked Aljamain Sterling taking on 4th ranked Cory Sandhagen. Based on the UFC’s plans, the bout is most certainly a title eliminator with the winner having a 5 fight win streak and the strongest claim to the winner of Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo.

What do you make of the UFC’s proposed Bantamweight Championship fight?
