Robert Whittaker is the next legitimate contender in line for a title shot. However, champ Israel Adesanya has plans of having not one but two belts with him. His former opponent, Whittaker, seems confident in Adesanya’s ability to do so by defeating Jan Blachowicz.

Robert Whittaker is coming off a win over Jared Cannonier at UFC 254. The victory should’ve led him to a shot at regaining his belt against Israel Adesanya. However, the Nigerian-born Kiwi doesn’t seem excited with the prospect of having a rematch against someone whom he defeated convincingly the first time around.

Therefore, Adesanya has turned his attention to the light heavyweight division. He has expressed his desire to fight light heavyweight kingpin Jan Blachowicz for the title. Having fought Adesanya himself, Whittaker believes ‘The Last Stylebender’ will come out on top against the Polish champ.

Yeah, I do,” Whittaker told Submission Radio when asked whether Adesanya can get past Blachowicz. “His striking is so much better. Jan’s got that big power, but Israel (Adesanya) doesn’t get hit that much. I think this is a picture-perfect fight for him to get the belt away from the division,”

Robert Whittaker is certain that he is the No. 1 contender at middleweight

‘The Reaper’ has looked like his own self in the two fights that he has had in the latter half of the year. He first took care of Darren Till is a striking chess match. He then overcame the challenge of ‘The Killa Gorilla’ in his second fight on Fight Island.

Whittaker has openly accepted that he was burned out with competing at a high level. Therefore, the time away from the sport after losing the belt helped him a lot in rekindling the fire for fighting. Even his performance, as of late, is good enough for him to earn a title shot.

“I’ve already earned the right for it. That’s what the fight with Jared was. That fight was the No. 1 contender fight,” Whittaker added.

At this point, Whittaker’s biggest enemy is the situation with the champ moving up. He can’t complain about the same as he knows that the ball is in Adesanya’s court. Therefore, Whittaker will have to plan very carefully if he will sit and wait for the title shot or go out there and test himself against quality competition once again before a title shot.
