UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman is ready to face off against Jorge Masvidal on May 9. But, under a condition.

Despite a global pandemic, The UFC is planning to move ahead with its schedule starting from May 9. The company has put together the most stacked card of the year, with Justin Gaethje vs Tony Ferguson as the headliner for the interim lightweight strap.

Followed by Henry Cejudo vs Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title, and Amanda Nunes vs Felicia Spencer for the women’s featherweight championship. Apart from that, Francis Ngannou vs Jarzinho Rozenstruik also made it to the card.

Recently, Kamaru Usman stated his interest to fight in May. The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ is on a remarkable winning streak in the UFC. He snatched the title from Tyron Woodley last year. And is coming off an impressive win over Colby Covington.

Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal at UFC 249?

Speaking to Damon Martin of MMA Fighting, Usman said, “I’m ready whenever. Like I said, as long as I’m compensated and you can quote me on this: I’m ready to rumble at any moment as long as I’m compensated. I am ready to rumble.”

“So May 9 if something falls out, they need me to go, I’m ready to rumble. Just make sure I’m compensated.” He added.

As reported earlier, not all fights on the May 9 card are confirmed. The governments of numerous countries have imposed severe lockdowns. Since some of the fighters on the card are not US citizens, It could prove difficult for UFC to ship international fighters to the United States. This can leave some room for Masvidal vs Usman.

Should one of the 3 title fights fall through, Usman and Masvidal could fill in the gap. But, is it needed? The fight between ‘Gamebred’ and the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ can sell PPVs on its own. Booking a fight of this magnitude on an already stacked card does not make sense.

No doubt that Masvidal vs Usman would be an impressive addition to the card. But, putting it on the May 9 card may not be viable for the company.
