Former UFC champion Tyron Woodley is set to compete in his second fight at the UFC Apex. He had a forgettable outing in May and will be keen to get back to winning ways. The fighter has received advice from all corners for his fight against Colby Covington on September 19. He has taken one piece of advice seriously, thus revealing a game plan which also shows fans his disdain for his opponent.

The #5 ranked welterweight responded to a fan suggestion of ‘letting his hands go’. He replied, “I agree with you, I will let my hands go. You guys and you fans telling me ‘let your hands go, let your hands go.’ I need to let them go. You have that, you have my word, I will let these hands go. I’ll let them go upside his head, body. I might even punch in the sack for the warning, bap. I will take the warning or even the point deduction, I feel good guys.”

Strikes to the sack warrant a stoppage in the fight and a caution to the fighter who commits the infraction. Initially, deemed accidental the fight continues but repeated low strikes lead to the referee calling for a point penalty.

Given Woodley’s declaration that he intends to punch Covington “in the sack,” it may be interesting to see if the referee lets the first of these strikes pass.

His intentions to let his hands go could serve him well. This is because Woodley froze against Gilbert Burns and couldn’t muster any serious offense. Hence, according to some fans, he was a sitting duck for the full 25 minutes.

By letting his hands go, ‘The Chosen One’ could hope to rediscover the form that led to him being the first to KO Robbie Lawler in over 12 years. Woodley’s need to settle a personal score could see him be aggressive as he wants to hurt Covington and not just beat him.

Could fighting Colby Covington be the catalyst to free Tyron Woodley and help him secure a massive turnaround in the UFC?
