UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has a new challenger vying for his gold strap going into UFC 251. The NCAA Division 2 wrestler will now stand across the BMF champion Jorge Masvidal who steps in on short notice. ‘Gamebred’ fills in for Gilbert Burns who ended up testing positive for COVID-19 and was immediately pulled from the Fight Island Card.
“It’s a participation medal”- Kamaru Usman
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ spoke out in a previous interview via MMA Junkie on potentially fighting Jorge Masvidal down the line. He also responded to an interviewer checking in on whether he would like to own the black and gold BMF strap.

“I want him to bring it like I said you bring that. You’re going to put that up too. It’s not a title, it’s a participation medal that’s all it is. You know back in school, in elementary school you got the first one, usually a blue one and then second and third place. They then give all the other participation ones just so you can feel good about yourself.”
He went on to explain that Jorge’s coveted BMF title was merely a participation medal. However, the undisputed champion made it clear that he wants Masvidal’s belt and status.

“You think he’s sitting at home looking at that thing like ‘Yes, I’m the BMF champion’? It’s just a participation medal but yeah I want it, I want everything. I want him to bring it, so I can take it, throw it in my closet.”
Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal have plenty of unsavory feelings for each other even though they fight on 6-days notice. The two Welterweights have been jawing back and forth on social media for the better part of a year. Not to mention the intensity between the two combatants has helped build up the title fight to astronomical proportions.
