Jorge Masvidal has had a long and arduous journey to the top of the sport. ‘Gamebred’ has competed 48 times as a professional. However, just 18 of those fights have come as part of the UFC. The Welterweight fighter honed his skills for nearly a decade before making it to the big time. In a chat with Brett Okamoto, the BMF Champion sheds light on his hard years of struggle before the UFC.

The Welterweight fighter touched on how he was unable to pay the rent in his early days as a fighter. The 35-year-old who had his first professional fight aged 18 revealed that he would spend his nights in his car or at the gym. “15-22… not always but on and off if I couldn’t pay the rent I was like ‘well can’t pay the rent this month, I’m out of this place, getting evicted. I’ll stay in the car for 2 months, gather up money or at the gym.'”

However, Masvidal doesn’t look back at his struggle as something tough as he accepts that the struggles are part of the journey to the top. “I used to sleep a lot at the gym as well. Just chasing the dream that’s all part of it.”

At this point in the conversation, ‘Gamebred’ began to talk about his first car. He said, “My first car… was comfortable to sleep in. Two windows didn’t go down, the AC was broke so it kinda sucks. It was a Chevrolet Bonneville. Like from the 70s. I don’t even know how that thing worked. I got a super good deal paid like $500-$600 for it.”

Okamoto quizzed the fighter about where he used to sleep and got a prompt response. “The back seat, I just go to the gym and just post up there in the back seat, sleep, wake up, be the first guy there a lot of times. People be like ‘Oh you’re so disciplined.’ No, I literally live back here.”

He had a clear end goal in sight

Masvidal continued, “Fun days. I didn’t matter. My mind said, and I’ll share it with the world. If you think like this, I think you can make it out of anywhere. I knew I’d get to a better place. That didn’t bother me at all.”

Some things did trouble the fighter. These were the heat, the bugs, and how people with dogs would wake him up. Whilst reminiscing on those incidents he says, “Those moments sucked, but it was like I know I’m gonna be out of here. Maybe I didn’t get all the tools right now that I needed or I didn’t come from a trust fund or something. But I knew I would get myself out of there.”

‘Gamebred’ had a dream and he worked towards it which made his success even sweeter. “I would envision it as I lay in the car sleeping. One day I’m gonna have this… and open the fridge and it’s gonna be filled with food and I’m gonna do whatever the hell I want and I made it happen.”
