

UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier spoke to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani following his impressive comeback victory against Dan Hooker. The two top 5 divisional contenders squared off at UFC on ESPN 12 taking place in Las Vegas. The main event for the final fight card in the states delivered in a big way, being lauded by fight fans. The scheduled bout is on top of the shortlist of candidates for ‘Fight of the Year’.
Dustin Poirier clawed his way back into the fight after arguably dropping the first two rounds to ‘The Hangman’. The two strikers landed massive volume and their durability was exalted by fellow fighters and MMA pundits. ‘The Diamond’ was able to secure the decision victory after landing crucial top control at key intervals.

Dustin Poirier: “It’s a fashion show”
The former 155-pound interim champion expressed his displeasure at the current landscape of promotion in MMA. He detailed his views while talking to Ariel Helwani about the stark contrast between himself and his contemporaries.
“The sport these days is a fashion show man, it’s a fashion show. It’s what you say, of course, you have to perform but it’s what you say and what headlines you put out there. I don’t mean like what you wear, but it’s a fashion show. It’s [about] who can peacock and do all this stuff.”
“I’m a dying breed man, I’m one of the old school guys who come out here and just scrap and just bleed. I do it for the love of the battle man.”

The Louisiana native has certainly followed through on these sentiments every time the cage door has closed behind him. He mentioned however that in the case of genuine animosity amongst fighters he understands the way the fight promotion works.

“If it’s real, if two guys really dislike each other than I mean [pause] but if its fabricated stuff just talking to make headlines, it’s very unattractive to me.”
“The Diamond” is now ranked second in the division only after the interim champion Justin Gaethje. Although an immediate title fight is not on the horizon for him, he may face off against Tony Ferguson in a title eliminator.
