Immediately after Jon Jones’ arrest, Thiago Santos took to social media demanding a fight for an interim belt. He put forth Dominick Reyes’ name as his opponent for the title.

Jon Jones recently pled guilty to charges of driving under the influence and negligent use of firearms. Therefore it is evident that he will not be stepping up to defend his title anytime soon. In an interview with MMAFighting Santos called for the last man who challenged Jones for the title.

“I suggested this fight with Reyes in case (Jones) steps away to get treatment like he said. I don’t think the division needs to wait. The division can go on. Even if it’s for an interim belt between Reyes and I since we both are next in line.”- Thiago Santos

“It’s unfortunate – it’s sad. I never hid that I’m a fan of the guy even before we fought, and that hasn’t changed. Unfortunately, he has those problems with alcohol. You can’t overlook that, but also can’t throw rocks at him. It’s only up to him. We hope he solves that problem and recovers.”- Thiago Santos

Santos claims that he feels for the Light heavyweight champion but he also knows that the division needs to go on. It cannot stop if a tragedy strikes its stalwart. The UFC went on to strip Jones of his title back in 2015 following his arrest. However, the UFC has not decided the fate of the division yet.

In a statement, Bones admits that he has an “unhealthy relationship” with alcohol and has agreed to do some personal work. Following a plea agreement, Jones has agreed to serve four days of house arrest, one year of probation and meet other conditions to avoid jail time. Marreta already has everything mapped out in his head. From the fight for the interim belt to the title fight following their fight.

“Fans were already talking about this fight even before this Jones situation happened, and I said I was willing to fight Reyes, and then Jones fights the winner when he returns. I just raised my hand and volunteered to fight. If there’s a fight to be made, I think I deserve it. And I’m ready.”- Thiago Santos

Both Santos and Reyes took on Jon Jones the last time the stepped into the octagon. Both the fighters met the same fate. However, Santos’ loss came by Split decision whereas that of Reyes came by unanimous decision. Santos went toe to toe with Bones back in July 2019 and Reyes in February 2020.

Do you think the UFC should book a fight for these two fighters?
