

Robert Whittaker put up an absolute clinic against Jared Cannonier in the co-main event of UFC 254. Coming off a spectacular win over former welterweight title contender Darren Till, Whittaker executed a smart approach against power-heavy Cannonier.

The former light-heavyweight contender, who was riding on a three-fight win streak with wins over the likes of Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson, fell short on the judges’ scorecards as he suffered his first loss in the middleweight division.
Jared Cannonier took to Instagram to congratulate the former champion. The ‘Killa Gorilla’ also opened up about the injuries he sustained during the fight and stated that he broke his left arm in the very first round of the co-main event.

“That didn’t go exactly how I wanted, but My spirits remain high and I’m happy with how I fought all things considered,” Cannonier wrote. “The very first kick he threw broke or fractured my left ulna.
“I couldn’t find my grove and adjust quickly to get the W so I’ll take my L with pride. @robwhittakermma certainly lived up to my expectations before and after the fight. Congrats mate. Enjoy Xmas and the new (baby). It was a hell of an experience to be here. Can’t wait to go again.”

Cannonier revealed that he suffered a broken left ulna from the first kick that Whittaker connected in the very first round. The ‘Killa Gorilla’ paid a heavy price for it as he struggled to get into the rhythm.

Jared Cannonier did not have much to offer in the co-main event, dropping a unanimous decision loss to former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker.
Soon after, UFC President Dana White expressed his interest in a potential Israel Adesanya vs Robert Whittaker 2, and if stars align, we might witness a rematch for the undisputed UFC middleweight championship soon.

Whittaker made a quick turnaround to take on #3 ranked Jared Cannonier. With a win over “The Killa Gorilla,” it’s safe to assume that Robert Whittaker is the front-runner for Adesanya’s undisputed middleweight gold.
