Jose Aldo has 34 professional fights to his name since debuting in 2004. He competed at Featherweight for a large part of his career and won 18 matches in a row before going down to Conor McGregor at UFC 194. Here he lost the 145 lbs divisional championship. Later he went on to reclaim the belt, but regular losses derailed his momentum. After going down to Alexander Volkanovski, the fighter made a surprising drop in weight class. Now, the Brazilian has claimed that the weight cut at Bantamweight is much easier.

In a chat with Brett Okamoto of ESPN, the Bantamweight Championship contender opened up on how quarantine will cause him a few minor issues in attempting to make weight.

Jose Aldo says 135 lbs weight cut is a lot easier for him

Via an interpreter, he said, “These two days here in Sao Paulo are definitely gonna get in the way of my weight cut a little bit. But I bought a rope to jump, and I’m gonna go in the jacuzzi in the room or whatever. I’m gonna be able to stay active, but I’m happy to be a part of this, and the cut for 135 has actually been a lot easier than it was at 145.”

This shocked one and all, with Okamoto himself keen to know more. He asked ‘Junior’ the same who obliged with a detailed reply. The 6th ranked Bantamweight fighter said, “We adapted everything for me to move down in weight so my nutrition and everything else, and I really feel like I rejuvenated my body.”

Furthermore, the 28-6 fighter claims that the move energized him and he maintains his weight and doesn’t feel drained a day before the fight. He said, “It gave me a lot of energy, so I’m keeping my weight down more than I was before, and so that cut down to 135, I’m still feeling a lot better after that cut.”

Aldo will compete in his second Bantamweight fight at UFC 251. He earned a crack at the title after suffering a close and polarizing split decision defeat to top-ranked Marlon Moraes at UFC 245. Standing in the way of his path to the vacant Championship is the undefeated Petr Yan.

What do you make of Jose Aldo’s claim that moving down a weight class has rejuvenated him? Do you see him joining a handful of fighters who have won titles in 2 divisions?
